Detroit isn't giving up Berggren for Cat.

And Hellebuych wants to play for a legit cup contender, And sorry Ottawa isn't one yet. I could honestly see Helly with Carolina.

Swap Berggren with Kubalik and add a later pick? Would that work for Detroit? Tbh Ottawa needs to get some goalie that can start 50-60 for them. Even if they have to overpay I think new ownership will be aggressive to fix that. Hellebuyck might not make too much sense though with only 1 year left. Carolina makes lots of sense!

Kubalik and a later pick is fine.

I think Ottawa would be better off going after Juuse Saros, Should Nashville make him available.

I agree but I think there will be many teams looking at trading for him, so an overpay is needed. Was hoping Ostapchuk playing with the Ice right there would get Winnipeg smitten with him, especially how he’s been playing in the playoffs for them. Would hate moving him though.

Would love Saros! Just have to hope he’s made available! Thanks for your input on the trades! smile I agree Saros would be the top target!

My pleasure, Just where Ottawa is at in it's current rebuild. Not sure if an aging Connor Hellebuyck makes much sense.

overpaying for a player is dumb and will backfire, especially when its a G, Gs are way to volatile and unpredictable to trade major assets for, NJD would have NEVER traded 9th OA (Horvat) for Schneider had they known before hand how things turned out. Gs are not worth the risks of trading major assets.

I don't know much about Berggren but from everything I have been able to glean... Why not?

Obviously I don't have much of a dog in this fight, but isn't DeBrincat way ahead of Berggren in his development, and if Berggren reaches his potential, isn't his ceiling more or less where DeBrincat is at?

The goal is to improve the team. Not chase your own tail. Berggren is still improving. Injuries delayed his development. He's really coming on now. He's playing on a dirt cheap contract.

I don't believe Detroit is trading for Cat. Yzerman keeps saying he wants goals but more importantly he wants to be tougher to play against. Cat doesn't fit that criteria.

Meaning you don't see DeBrincat as a well rounded player and while he can score, you see him as a defensive liability?

What does this team need the most and how does debrincat not help? I get for the kings ransom a deal would actually be but that trade is a gift.

Cat isn't the type of player Detroit needs. Did he score 40 goals because he rode Patty Kane's coat tails? I don't know. I'm not going to gamble paying him 8-9 mil for the next 8 years hoping he can score without Kane.

If we're giving up assets like Bergy then it should be for a 2C right in his prime. That's our biggest need and we're not taking the next step until we acquire one. Kasper isn't ready yet and Copp isn't the answer at 2C.

I understand your perspective sir and what you feel your team's priorities are. I still feel however that at the end of his career we will look back and DeBrincat's success will stand on it's own. He is a phenomenal player and you would be lucky to have him.

The only argument against him IMO is that he's kind of the 1 small player you should have in your top 6. If you have a Caufield and a DeBrincat for example, it's gonna be hard to dig those pucks out of the corners.

I'd take Cat for a reasonable price. But I don't know if he's a stand alone player. Meaning, can he produce goals himself? Because he certainly benefitted playing with Kane. But I need to be sure for 8 years and 8-9 mil.

Bergy isn't untouchable. Cat is certainly an upgrade. But I'm thinking long term. Why pay Cat 8-9 mil to score 30-40 when I can pay Bergy less than a mil to score 30? Even on his next contract he'll make far less than Cat will.

I'm factoring in Seider and Raymond getting big deals. Unless Stevie goes the bridge deal route. But that could backfire. They'll be even more expensive after their bridge deals.

Kucherov is well worth his 9.5 mil. Is Cat really worth 8-9? I don't know. I see Cat and I see Kane.

Very few players in the NHL can break the game on their own, it's always a team effort and a bit of a chemistry experiment.

Kane could do it at one point in his career. Cat cannot. But Cat can finish a play and he can do it in motion (not standing still waiting for a pass). That is not nothing, there are not a lot of snipers at his level who can.

I wouldn't be upset if Stevie traded for Cat. You can't teach goal scoring and we certainly need it. I'm just not willing to trade Bergy to get him. It's essentially robbing Peter to pay Paul. Oh great. We're paying 8 mil more for 10 more goals.

Edit: Sorry. 12 more goals. Cat scored 27 in 82. Bergy scored 15 in 67.

How many "cup contending" teams are in the position to give out a 70mil-ish contract to a goalie? He'll sign where the money is im sure.
