Yea as I said, smartest move for us to do would be to let him play another year or 2 with Sid and another skilled young winger to boost up his stats, then sell high and get the most back that we can.
Don’t think any teams would really overpay for that tho, $5.125m contract on its first year, coming off a down season, NMC for 3 years. That’s hard leverage for us. And with the flat cap to add onto all of that, a Rust trade is probably highly unlikely this off-season and I have no complaints about that. I like Rust and I like what he brings to the table for this Pens team, I don’t think we are in any position to where we need to make a move for him. He’s more than capable of having a bounce back year next year and then feeding off of that.
My only concern is his age, he will be 31 in May. Say he doesn't have a good year next yr, then we will be stuck with him until the end of his contract. No one will want a 32 yr with that contract after next yr. its a high risk/reward type situation, just one I'd rather see if I can deal with this yr. I just think now might be the time to do it but only for the right deal. Also, with the cap going up by at least 1 million, most likely more, that could help teams to take him. I also just saw that the cap could be 88 million in 2024/2025 season. That would be interesting.
