Holland fumbled the Ekholm trade by not asking for more retention as next year they got cap problems to deal with and Bouchard might price himself out as mentioned 8.5mill and got to extend other guys as well (Kostin, Mcleod, etc.). I would have included a good prospect to go NSH can u retain maybe 40-50%. Sure its looking good now but next year that 6mill (which is 1.5mill more than Barrie) gonna cause headaches.

The Oilers are 18-2-1 since this trade. If they win a Cup it is well worth 'overpaying' They'll be able to get free agents to come cheap just like the Hawks and Bolts to win Cups. Its about legacy for a lot of players.
Yes, Holland could have gotten more, maybe but the fact is he didnt even give up one of their top prospects but paid with some late rnd picks and that is quite remarkable. What yo'ure asking for can be done in the offseason. They can pay that top prospect to dump salary and it shouldnt be too expensive unless they dump Campbell. You are speaking like they have no choices this Summer. They have choices and options ,same as they had options during this past TDL.
You cant judge what this trade will look like next season, this is an ALL IN move and the right one at that. Long overdue by Holland.

Sure good record but cap space is also important and fighting for more retention would have helped the Oilers not just now but in the future

As now Bouchard could price himself out as what if he wants more than 4mill. Oilers have 8mill next year so if he take lets say 5mill that leaves them 3mill to sign 5 guys including a Mcleod and Kostin extension

If Holland fought for more retention on Ekholm that issues gone. Got to think more than just the present and not be to short-sighted.

Again. It isnt short sighted. These problems you speak of with cap room can be addressed during the offseason. There is no difference between moving a top prospect at the deadline to move salary as there is to move said top prospect during the Summer especially when they'll be more teams capable and willing to take on salary

If u cant see its short signted I cant help you. I will leave it with this

Holland only asking for 250k retention was a fumble on his part. If NSH was willing to retain for multiple years on Ekholm then he should have pushed for more but he didnt. So hes gonna have to deal little cap space next year to sign 6 guys including Bouchard, Mcleod, and Kostin

As in the end whats better Ekholm at 6mill or Ekholm at 4.685mill (25% ret)
