The funny thing is...
I'm a Red Wings fan.
Here's my convoluted reasoning:
(1) I think Edvinsson is ready to break into the NHL. and (2) Chiarot is blocking him.
That's just the start. I have several more reasons and they all revolve around (3) I don't like Chiarot.
He lays out some big hits. Awesome. But on every pairing, he drags down: Seider. And now Hronek. He's 31 and slowing down. The big hits and toughness are fine... the constant misplays/ giveaways/ misses are not. 32 in May? And signed for 3 more years? IMO, he's an albatross. I think trading him is addition by subtraction. He is NOT a top pairing D'man. Not anymore. He should be 3rd pairing on the left side. But a playoff team would want him just for the toughness element required there. But... Detroit is still team-building and as far as I'm concerned, Chiarot is blocking this team's growth. Yzerman can find playoff toughness elsewhere.
I want to:
1) Clear his future salary off the books.
2) Extend Walman because he's been a great pairing with Seider.
3) Eliminate an overall negative defenseman by trading Chiarot.
4) Open up a spot for Edvinsson
5) You're not going to get a tremendous return for Chiarot: not with 3 years after this one, 32 starting next year and showing his age, net negative on the ice and that was with SEIDER!
6) I am perfectly fine with RHD Timmins. Selected 32nd overall in 2017... he's been a puck-mover his entire career. In the minors. Like Walman, he needs ice time/ opportunity in the NHL. Like Walman, I think he surprises on the upside. And if he ends up 3rd pairing only on the right side... I'm good with that.
7) Woll has been getting better the last few years in the minors, going from college .918 save %, to 2020 AHL .890 save %, to 2021 AHL/ NHL .910 save %, to 2022 AHL/ NHL .930 save %.24 y.o. 6' 3" goalie drafted by the Leafs in thge 3rd round 2016... I think he deserves the chance to see if he can back up Husso.
I am perfectly fine with getting these two guys for albatross Chiarot.
In fact, it's Leafs that probably say no... unless they are enamored with Chiarot's toughness/ hits and are willing to take on 3 more years of him after this year at $4.75 mill AAV.
But I doubt it. This is a wish-trade... I wish Yzerman could get rid of Chiarot for exactly a package liker this...
