Because I believe Holl to be a serious downgrade from Mayfield, and I don't think adding Malgin bridges that value gap.

Why are the Islanders doing this? Holl is a more expensive Mayfield - they're incredibly similar players, except Mayfield is cheaper. Malgin doesn't move the needle at all for this deal, as every team has a half-dozen guys like this kicking around their AHL squad. The Isles basically save you about $1.3M in cap (Holl/Malgin=$2.75M, Mayfield=$1.45M) for no reason other than the goodness of their hearts? Add a pick or a decent prospect if you want to move that kind of cap.
