I'll agree with you on Shatternkirk. But the Ducks would never take that deal for Fowler. And unlikely that Vegas would spend 6.5m on Stepan.

Unlikely that NYR would leave him unprotected in my opinion ...

And 3 more things i disagree with: 1) Girardi a buyout, 2) Klein in the minors and 3) Raanta+ for Stajan. Just my opinion though.

Maybe they won't leave him unprotected...it makes no difference. Vegas is unlikely is claim him. But let's say Vegas did claim him, if I'm a Ranger exec, then I have 6.5m to spend on a player or two that are better than Stepan.

Same with let's say Montreal. Weber is their best Dman. Leave him unprotected so you can protect some one else. And if Weber is claimed, that's a lot more money to spend elsewhere for years.

That is the point. One more year at that value. The NYR exec will do everything they can to try and get Hank a cup. So trading for a player like fowler who will become prohibitively expensive in a year is fine. It is the same situation they had with Yandle.

Grabner and a mid round pick is not enough for Fowler. Fowler is a top defensemen in this league and Grabner had one good year and is older than Fowler. Now i agree Anaheim isn't going to want to lose him for nothing but this is not a good return for the ducks. They can do so much better
