Why would they trade Toffoli? If we want Vilardi we can probably do a prospect swap with just Valimaki

Clear cap space and recoup some assets. I see him as a bit of a luxury in the 3rd line we cant afford this year. I'd be happy keeping the top 6 intack.

Valimaki added to kraken deal to get soucy. Think we need a moee experienced dman who can play up. Especially considering tanev will be out for a bit.

Could add valimaki to la trade and add one of their young rd (grans, faber) though.

but you only actually cleared 350k in cap for the 3rd line while while downgrading. That 350k can easily be saved by resigning Gudbranson instead of playing a guy like Soucy on his off-hand

Okay so lets assume you can move valimaki for vilardi and monahan for future considerations (think this is unlikely).

So essentially what you're comparing is:
Toffoli + Gudbranson vs Donskoi + Soucy + 2nd.

Think its safe to say:
Toffoli > donskoi
Gudbranson < soucy.

Personally, I'd prefer the improvement on the backend rather then the third line. Soucy has proven to be able to play both sides and up and down the lineup. Given that tanev will start the season out and how unexperienced our left side is, i appreciate that flexibility. Didn't like the look of our d group when tanev went down.

Also recouping a pick, when the flames are very light in picks, is a nice bonus.

You are also not accounting for the term lost in the swap of Toffoli to Donskoi, or that Soucy is also a rental. I also dont think calling Soucy better is a completely accurate argument since Gudbranson was very good for us last year.

I also think Pelletier makes the team permanently next season. What if Valimaki was traded with Logan Stanley for example? Would that make you feel more comfortable with the LD depth while Tanev is out? Then you can have Dube at 3C and Pelletier at 3LW

Not too concerned with losing 1 year of control on Toffoli. We should be in a better cap situation next year with more certainty with where we stand. This provides us the flexibility to adjust as needed. I feel like pelletier will need another year of seasoning, so having donskoi expiring gives us a spot in the top 9 to slot him (something would have to give in our top 9 next year anyways). If hes ready this year you can still slot someone down but atleast we have a solid top 9 either way and some competition for slots.

1 year of soucy gives us another year to examing the young d. We will have a better idea of what kylington is and if soucy is a good fit. Soucy would only be 28 so he could be a option to re-sign if it works.

Gudbranson was good under sutter but i think Soucy has been the better player and would also flourish even further under sutter.

Not against stanley but I'm pretty high on vilardi. Think he's a worthwhile gamble and could pop in a big way
