Easy. There is a salary cap. And u can’t pay 3 LHD 4M plus. And Pettersson being only 25 and making just 4M per, and signed long term would be the easiest to trade. U can’t pay 3 LHD 4M plus in a salary cap era. Especially with your top prospect, POJ, NHL ready. And having resigned Freidman too.

In order to resign Rakell, one of Petterson or Dumo has to go.

And Pens have no RHD prospects(maybe Ryan McCleary but he was a 7th round pick). Maniscalco can’t even make it in the AHL. He’s been playing in the ECHL. Cam Lee has been playing both his strong side(LHD) and his offside(RHD) just to give him more versatility and a better chance to make the NHL. But he’s most likely a 3rd pairing D-man. I like CamLee and he could possible be a good NHL 2nd pairing but he’s definitely not a top prospect.

Getting a good RHD prospect is very much needed.

We can get a better D prospect than to send out Pettersson for that minimal of a return. Take the third at that point.

Lol..u just don’t know who Antti Tuomisto is. That’s ok though. It’s not easy or common to know every teams top prospects.

https://octopusthrower.com/2021/08/17/red-wings-pipeline-antti-tuomisto/

Antti Tuomisto was a very high 2nd round pick in 2019; 35th overall. He’s a 6’5 205 pound, RHD, with a wicked shot from the point and is learning the US game playing in the NCAA. He’s 21 years old. He’s ETA is probably 2024-25 season(2 years). Not gonna find a comparable RHD in the 3rd round.

We aren’t trading a current NHL top 4 dman for a guy that won’t play for another 2-3 years. Did you forget we are still trying to compete? While yes it is great to get return for prospects but we have to do it the right way and this isn’t the right way trading a current bridge top 4 dman for a guy that won’t play in 2-3 years. That’s essentially saying you’re replacing Pettersson with a prospect. That makes zero sense and that then leaves us with a gap in left D that we have to overspend to a free agent most likely or use more assets to trade for one. Trade Pettersson for the third, that’s the consensus here or don’t trade him at all unless the return is 100% in our favor.

In the salary cap era paying three LHD 4M plus isn’t sustainable. Especially with your top prospect, POJ, NHL ready. And having resigned Freidman also. So It definitely doenst leave a hole at the 3rd pairing LHD. Having had those 3 LHD is a luxury; a luxury they can’t afford anymore.

In order to resign Rakell, one of Petterson or Dumo has to go. And It is a move to help the Pens complete.

Detroit is happy to give you a 3rd for Pettersson but we won't trade Tuomisto, he's the only good RD prospect we have.

And….in your opinion “We aren’t trading a current NHL top 4 dman for a guy that won’t play for another 2-3 years…”…We who?? It’s not your choice or your decision. Well, In my opinion, they do that trade tomorrow.

You would rather a 3rd round pick too..lol. Than a top prospect, RHD, that was selected 35th overall(there are only 32 picks in the 1st round). That 18-19 year old, 3rd round pick you want statistically will probably never see the NHL let alone in the next 2-3 seasons.
