Zero chance Rangers do this with Goodrow.
I wouldn't want his term, but he's the exact kind of piece the Senator would go after in terms of the identity and style of play they are trying to build. If this trade happens after his bonus, he will only be owed 2.5 million this season. The Senators are a budget team, not a cap team. They often make trades that lower their salary during the year they made the trade, but hurt them in the long run. So acquiring a big effective top 9 forward who is really cheap this year at the expense of paying him 5M the next two years is exactly what they would do.
If this trade actually happened, I think the Rangers might have to take Del Zotto, and the Senators would probably throw in a 2nd or 3rd round pick to compensate the Rangers for taking the salary dump. Del Zotto makes 2.25M against a 2M cap hit, and could play on the Rangers bottom pair. That would make the trade almost salary neutral this season for Ottawa. There would also be a weird additional pick where the Rangers get to upgrade a round late in the draft for no reason. Like they get Ottawa's 2024 5th round pick, and Ottawa gets the Rangers 2024 6th round pick.
So I'd say Del Zotto, 2023 OTT 2nd, 2024 OTT 5th for Goodrow, 2024 NYR 6th. This isn't me saying I'd make this trade, it's more me jumping into Dorion's skin and saying how I think the Senators would format the trade. They would get off on the idea that Goodrow was a major piece for two big playoff teams, and he represents the Senators becoming a bigger tougher team to play against.
With that said, the Senators are often overly concerned with term for players who aren't stars, so that might be the deal breaker. The trade would be reamed, because instead of acquiring Goodrow, they could have kept Nick Paul, who would play a similar role. I get that they got Joseph for Paul, but that is how it would be seen.
