    A. Can we all stop selling Suzuki?
    B. You don’t trade that much for UFA rights
    C. No way we should give up that much Garland
    D. TDA gets more that
    E. That 3rd pair isn’t great

If you're trading Necas it should be for someone JT and the Nucks can just retain half. Gives you money left over for the lowball on the TDA AAV

I just don’t get the fascination with trading Necas. His value is at an all time low, yet he still scored 40pts in an off year. I’m all for giving him a short term bridge deal and letting RBA mould him into a top 6 C.

Aho-Necas-Kotkaniemi-Drury down the middle in a few years, while they’re all in their primes, seems dreamy.

The point was to get aggressive to get UFA negotiating rights with Forsberg now, and the advantage of an 8th year. If you want to scale back the offer, that’s fine. But that was the point.

Garland would be an amazing fit in the canes system, and I think he’d be a 20+ goal scorer for us under contract for 4 years. This is a lower number and term than either Nino or Troch will ask and at a lower cost.

I know TDA should get more than that, but I think he’d take lower if we could bring in two players like Garland and Forsberg and veterans Cole and Smith as well.

The 3rd pair isn’t great you’re correct…but it’s the 3rd pair. What would you suggest as a better option?

I understand that point, but I have serious doubts that Necas could be a full time centerman. I think Rod knows a center when he sees one, and he’s been in our system for almost 5 years.

Lindholm and Necas couldn’t be more polar opposite as players. Rod has been on the record saying that he wanted to keep Lindholm and play him at center.

Necas isn’t the same player defensively than Lindholm is/was even when he was with the Canes.

I’d beg to differ. I find them on very similar paths, to each their own though.

I can not see Necas as a 40 goal scoring Selke candidate. Maybe my vision is cloudy, but when Lindholm was in Carolina, I could see a top 6 center who was really good defensively (I didn’t see the goal scoring though).

I really like Necas, I just don’t see his future being in Carolina. Which is a shame.

VAN already have 5'10 Hughes, 5'11 Rathbone and Dermott who is a generous 6'0. Adding Bear doesn't make sense.

And your 6'7 defenseman remark, doesn't make much sense either.

thats cool about getting his rights but selling off Suzuki and a pick to save maybe 500k annually, is a little extreme.

I dont mind Garland but it would be a 1 for 1 swap for Necas. Garland doesnt fix any of our issues.

TDA isnt at that point in his career where he takes less money to increase a team's chance to win. He is at the point in his career where he maximizes his value.

Canes have no shot at Forsberg if he hits UFA, only shot is to
Eliminate competition and 8th year is the differentiation.

canes dont have a shot at Forsberg if he wants 9 million for 7 years either. could we afford it, sure. Are we, no. Also we cant sign him to 8 years unless we had his rights before the trade deadline.

This was named an ‘aggressive’ offseason and mentioned trading for his rights before free agency. The idea of this post was we will have to change the way we work if we want to get some goal scorer like Forsberg.

Where is that rule listed, not sure I’ve encountered that before. I was pretty sure the reserve list prior to the deadline was only used for player eligibility for play in the playoffs, not contract extensions.

    (b) The following practices also shall not be permitted under this Agreement and may not be included in any SPC, nor otherwise agreed to by any Club, any person or any entity:

(iv) An SPC with a term of greater than seven (7) years, provided, however, that a Club may sign a Player to an SPC with a term of up to eight (8) years if that Player was on such Club’s Reserve List as of and since the most recent Trade Deadline. With respect to potential Unrestricted Free Agents only, the ability to re-sign a Player to an SPC of eight (8) years expires when the Player becomes an Unrestricted Free Agent. With respect to a Player who becomes a Group 2 Restricted Free Agent, a Club may sign such Player to an SPC with a term of up to eight (8) years provided such Player was on such Club’s Reserve List and/or Restricted Free Agent List as of and since the most recent Trade Deadline.

    Article 50.8

The Reserve List includes unsigned drafted players, and any other unsigned player a team may have the exclusive signing rights to. All players who have to be signed to an ELC cannot get a longer term since ELC rules mandate the term of the contract. Any player who is due a contract as an RFA or UFA and was on the team signing them at the trade deadline can get an eight-year deal.
