Because today’s nhl requires centres to be excellent skaters and playmakers as well as defensively sound. Mariner checks every box. Tavares only checks the playmaker box but even then he isn’t better in that category than Marner. Tavares can take the face offs and then play on the right. It’s a really easy transition

Except that lots of players who are exceptional skaters and defensively sound simply cannot play C at a high level. There is a reason no nhl coach has played marner there and 3 have played nylander there despite not being as good a skater or defensively as marner.
Marner is as pure a winger as there is. Asking him to play c is like asking him to play defence
