Description
This is ultimately what I think the devils could do this offseason that is respectable and reasonable. In reality, Cam Fowler is going to cost too much and he is having a great season in Anaheim so its looking unlikely he will be moved, but due to their plethra of defensemen, the devils acquire young Sami Vatanen who had a little disappointing of a season compared to his first 2, for a 3rd round pick in 2017, and a 2018 2nd rounder and 5th rounder.
Shattenkirk is the highest demanded free agent on the market and while he would be great to have, the devils look to add a different Capitals blue-liner, Karl Alner. Alzner is more of a stay at home defensemen which is what the devils need with Andy Greene aging and Larsson being traded last year. The acquisition of Vatanen makes the Alzner pick-up a little easier for the devils fans to swallow because Vatanen is the offensive defensemen the team is looking for. They get a 2 for 1 deal instead of pooling all their money for Shattenkirk, who is having a disappointing post-season.
Devils lose Ben Lovejoy in the Expansion draft to the Vegas Golden Knights. Vegas acquires a veteran defensemen who doesn't carry a large cap hit and has stanley cup playoff experience when winning the cup with the Penguins in 2016.
The devils move Dalton Prout for a 4th rounder in 2018. There is no room for him on the roster or as a backup because youngsters Santini and Kapla will fill in when someone goes down with an Injury.
Finally, The Devils search all offseason for a trade to make sending Cammalleri out of New Jersey but (even offering to retain a little of his salary) they can't find a buyer. Cammy stays on the team and Shero revisits this trade later in the season based on how Cammy and the team is doing.

To conclude, this is most reasonable for this franchise. Kovalchuk comes back on a 3 year 5,750,000 deal, forfeiting around 900,000 from his originally 2010 6,667,000 dollar contract. Kovy ultimately accepts and stays on the team. Shero resigns FA Severson to a bridge contract and gives Blandisi and Bennet 1 year deals again to solidify the bottom 6.
Last note*** expect Shero to make a run at FA Dwight King. Devils aren't too strong on the Left side and King brings hard nose hockey to the team, which they have been missing for a while. If the price is right, Shero grabs him.

Happy now? I really don't see it growing anymore than that. Anaheim is looking to get rid of defensemen, GM's no that and alert going to bite to pay more

I changed it to a 3rd, 2nd, and 5th. Really can't see it growing past that. My opinion and many others

Offensive RHD come at a premium you're still not getting Vatanen for that little. That's just pure fact.

I agree they come at a premium but theres is the expansion draft (!!) this year and that changes a whole lot. Would you rather lose Vatanen for nothing or something. Im also curious as to what type of return you are expecting. Why ask for prospects when you can just draft your own with the picks you acquired. Plus, I really don't think any team is going to give up a first round pick for a guy that is titled "offensive" defensemen and posted his worst stats of his career in 2017...To go along with that, the team has too many defensemen to protect and other GM's know that. They are going to play Anaheim out and wait for them to accept something smaller because in the end, something is better than nothing.

The expansion draft may low his value and ANA may fill the need to move him before the draft, but 28 other teams are willing to give more then that get get him.
So Jersey will need to give ANA more to get him.

It's not losing him for nothing that is the issue. Oilers would be able to offer more (and willing) and so would other teams.

I agree the price may be higher, but the Oilers run into a problem themselves. They are then left exposing one of Larsson, Klefboom, or Sekera. Another avenue for the Devils may be eating a bad contract in Anaheim, like Despres or Stoner. Maybe his specific suggestion isnt outstanding but the idea of getting Vatanen for a distressed price isnt crazy.

Bob Murray is nothing if not stubborn and will wait until the last second. I personally believe that one of the other GMs will blink before Murray would need to get something done. And as for the fact 2017 was his worst season to date his production wasn't too far off from what he did the year before when he signed his deal, and spent a good chunk of this year hurt or was playing hurt.

What's all this love for Kovalchuk. Why would the Devils want him. Spend your money elsewhere. Why cheap out on Severson? Of the Devils think he a long term solution, maybe a more generous longer term contract is wise.
Vatanen might be available, but think Ducks would like NHLer or near NHLer who do not need draft protection instead of picks.

clark, I agree. Take Kovlachuk and trade him. He is not for a team that might still be a few years away. The Devils are better off today than they were this time yesterday. But Nolan/Hischier doesnt end this rebuild, merely acclerates it. They need assets, not an aging winger who may not be real useful in say 2 years when theyre a lot better. They need picks or defensive help.
