Even Better Next Year

Description
Caps should get better next season just by subtraction and getting younger. Older, slower guys are out like Alzner, Orpik, Oshie, Williams and replaced by young speed and skill like Bura, Vrana, Schmidt, and Bowey.

I like Alzner but he's getting slower since his injury and it's very dumb to invest big money and term into defensive defensemen like Girardi or Staal. Let him go. Schmidt has and can replace him and is much better.

Also Orpik needs to go. There are a couple ways to do it, but someone on here suggested a Orpik Cammalleri switch and that makes perfect sense. Both older players getting paid too much/similar money on same term, but NJD could use Orpik more and Caps could use Cammalleri more. Plus the Shero connection makes sense.

Campbell is more than likely retiring but if he wants 1 more shot at the Cup then he should go to Washington. If not him Djoos could take that spot, issue is no way does Trotz allow a Djoos-Bowey pairing. If not him either than I'm sure there's a cheap good 3LHD out there.

Dadonov is a perfect replacement for Oshie. Similar styles but younger and cheaper. Would be great with Mojo and Kuzey.

Burakovksy is due for a HUGE season next season like 25+ goals, which is why Caps need to lock him up long term now. If they do a bridge deal they'll come out 2 years later having to pay him $6M, so settle around $4M+ now.

Karl Alzner - LAV probably signs Alzner in that UFA time period since he'll be the 2nd best available dman. That will count as their pick.

I don't think Bowey is ready for a full time role. He has yet to play a game in the NHL, which worries me, especially if we are going to contend for the Cup next year. I'd rather us move Orpik and give a prospect like Vanecek then take Cammalleri, who is just a different bad contract for us. If we don't take Cammalleri, we might have enough to bring Oshie back, which is extremely important. It was clear that we were a much more dynamic, energetic team with Oshie than without him. Kuznetsov shouldn't get $6 million. He was worth it last season, but this season he just isn't. As far as Burakovsky goes, I would absolutely give him the bridge deal. We are going to need to save money in whatever ways possible the next two offseasons. I'd rather us have the extra money to make another run or two at the Cup than plan for the future. We can do both by giving Bura a short term bridge deal. I do like the idea of bringing in Dadonov, I think he'd be great next to Kuzy.

Bowey is more than ready for the NHL. Just because he hasn't played in a NHL game doesn't mean he isn't By that logic he'll never play in the NHL.

I like Oshie but I'm not doing a 6 year $6M deal for him. He'll be 30+ and shot at an insane rate this season, he won't hit 30 goals again. I'll do a $5.6M for 3 years but that's it

I didn't say he wasn't ready for the NHL, I said he wasn't ready for a full time role. I'd give him a few games here and there, along with some more time in the AHL. On a team that is going to try and contend for the Cup next year, relying on a rookie defenseman is bad news. I'd be much more comfortable bringing in a third pairing guy via free agency, and then letting Bowey see 25 games in the regular season. If he plays well, let him play the rest of the way. If not, we have the defenseman from free agency.

Also, Travis Boyd better not be a full time NHLer, and Jay Beagle won't play the wing. Beagle is our best face-off guy, we will never play him on his off-wing. I could see Boyd getting a few games in here and there, but nothing major.

I didn't realize that you gave Burakovsky 8 years. He knows he'll be worth far more than that, he won't take 8 years at that price

Boyd was 6th in AHL scoring last year and is 23. He's more than ready for the NHL. He's the future 3C once Eller leaves so he needs NHL center time. Beagle can still take faceoffs at wing.

I just made one of these called what caps should do. I definitely agree with not signing Alzner. Also agree with moving Orpik contract, but I just don't see another team trading for that contract given his age and length of deal. Also not resigning Oshie would be a mistake. Burakovsky has a great shot but he does not have the complete game or intangibles of Oshie (at least not yet). Oshie put up 33 goals and in today's NHL, goal getters are hard to come by, especially ones that also play well along the boards and without the puck. I mean, look at Pens. Not alot of depth anywhere but Crosby, Kessel, Malkin can provide the goals they need. I don't think caps can win a Cup without a second goal getter to Ovie.
I had the same top 4 for defense. Definitely smart to go young and fast at D in today's game. I think Wilson should at least be given top 9F. I had him top 6f. He might not have the greatest pure offensive skills but he adds physical presence playing with guys like Mojo and Kuzy and can win board battles and drive to the front. He will soon be a 15+ goal scorer imo. When he was drafted people said he had the possibility to become a Lucic type player and we have to hope for that. He's played well in the postseason.
