I love EJ but no one is giving up a 2nd for him even retained. Maybe a 3rd. So then the question is -DeHaan an up grade on EJ? I don't think so. Now they are locked into DH for 2 years, a smaller less physical D (not like there isn't enough of them on the team already), with a whole mil they have saved for one year that they didn't need and a 3rd. I'm ok with keeping EJ, having a bigger, better and more punishing D and losing out on that less than 5% chance on NHL player with the pick and only having 4mil in cap left.

depends on why. If he hates the city, cant control that and dont blame him. If its the franchise, teams turning around and they need a veteran leader like him, he might be convinced

Your point is well-taken but the point for me is that they'd probably rather have Manson and some cap space to fill in the blanks at the TDL than have Manson and EJ but no cap space.

Yeah, it's a possibility but I suppose it depends a lot on how much longer he wants to play. He's been a "Western Conference" guy his whole career and has racehorses in the LA area; moving out east seems like it's something he wouldn't want to do but maybe he envisions himself playing another few years and likes the thought of helping a young team get better.

EJ has a cap of 6 mil. And 50% retention and DeHaan is 5 mil. Don't sign DeHaan. Keep EJ. Have 4.66 mil left in space instead of the 5.66 mil and a better team. Unless your needing 15-20mil (approx) at the TDL vs. what ...12-16? Nothing changes about Manson.
