Quoting: MANX
Here's the reality check. Colorado has come into the playoffs the last 2 years as Stanley Cup Finalist, correct? Have they been there, answer NO! Do they want to be there and win, answer Yes! The question Joe has to ask himself is do I save a piece (Newhook, Byram, etc) and possibly not get there again or do I sacrifice and IF I win it was worth it? I dont follow COL every game is Giroux going to get them there or someone else only Joe can answer that and the fans will have to live with it.
Reality check for you. Toffoli, signed for another two years (term = more value), got what amounts to two late 2nds, a late 1st, and a fifth. Giroux is no doubt the better player, but he's a rental. Name the last time a top-5 draft pick two years into his career was traded for a rental at the deadline. Can you?
Yes, the Avs have been Stanley Cup favorites for the past two years, but news flash, wining the cup is pretty damn difficult. There are no guarantees. Injuries (1st year they were favorites) can derail a team, as can a lack of experience playing playoff hockey (Girard last year). There's every reason to go for it this year with the Avs, but that doesn't mean mortgaging your potential top-4 defenseman or your 2C of the future. So yes, they need to sacrifice a prospect or two, but it won't be either of Newhook or Byram. Full stop. Barron, Helleson, Olausson, or Behrens? They'll definitely look at it.
