Chychrun is having a poor season and is currently injured, a common theme for him, but he is a good young Dman who is better than Keith and is what the Oilers hope Broberg will be in 2 or 3 years. The time is now for the Oilers, so Chychrun is worth the risk. This move will reduce Nurse’s minutes and move Keith down the depth chart.
Kessel and Boyd are added as good veteran depth pieces needed to help this team make the playoffs.
Koskinen and Kassian are added to help balance the money.
The Ullmark trade benefits Boston by giving them some cap room to make another deal, plus a tough, experienced depth defenseman. Senyshyn is given a new chance in a new organization, because he isn’t getting that where he is.
Petty is struggling and old, but has history in Edmonton, so he might be open to moving. Barrie has actually been very good on the Defensive side of things and has been the most steady Dman over the last 5 weeks and as a top scoring Dman in the NHL comes on a very team-friendly contract.
The Canadiens would have to retain on this trade, otherwise the Oilers would not be able to fit Petry’s salary next season.
Lavoie is added in consideration of Petry’s long term contract and the 2nd is added for this and AL.
