Even with the DeBrusk retention (and assuming that number is accurate), you still only have a 20 man roster. That won't work.

Rangers 4th line is pretty set as is, not sure why they would trade for Carrier.

Detroit only have two retention slots. They need both of them for their own players (Greiss & Leddy are the most likely). If you want Detroit to miss out on trading one of those two due to having used up all retention slots then you have to offer a lot more than a 3rd in compensation.

It's not about the cap. It's the limit of only three retentions allowed.

That's a good point about maximum number of retentions, and with Panik holding a spot this year and next, might need more compensation.

As for the 20 man roster - VGK did it last year (with the Taxi Squad helping) but officially only 20 men on the roster. When some players got injured, VGK even had to play a man or two short (only 15 skaters in big showdown against COL) and I think they will do it again if needed.
