Where are the Sedins?
I'm a big supporter of the Sedins and the preparation they do. They deserve 2-4 more years to retire as Canucks, but I'd say it's 50-50 if management offers them anything.
That being said, this mock-roster was an attempt to place some of the higher profile prospects. This summer almost everyone's contract is up and so I wanted to get inside Benning's head to see the depth chart on his wall. Trading Tanev without a seasoned replacement might be more aggressive than Benning, but not beyond consideration.
With all the expiring contracts, in case it was missed, I will point out Dorsett on retirement-LTIR. His spinal surgery was serious and he didn't look like he'd been working out yet even on the bike.
**Dahlen-Patrick-Boeser** would be a mighty fine line of complementary players. If not Patrick or another draft pick, there are a few available top 6 centers in this time frame, including: Duchene, Tavares, Tyler Johnson.
Once you know what the end result is worth, you at least have some idea of how much you're willing to spend (Tanev and 1st round pick in this case)
The rest of the lines are somewhat troubling, there are good pieces but I don't see their identity yet. I haven't given up on Virtanen, nor on Goldobin's defence, but could they mesh with Sutter on a possession/checking line? For the 4th line to not be a waste, Gaudette needs to be on par with Granlund and Gaunce needs to become a puck retrieval expert like Burrows or Hansen were. Cramarossa has looked good, Chaput too... competition and choice will bolster the bottom 6 if Gaunce or anyone isn't good enough.
Eriksson in theory should fit well on either of the top 2 lines, but we haven't seen the magic this season. Hopefully with a more dangerous team we get more space and powerplays. Add in better puck movement from the defence, who will have gained a lot of experience. And if that doesn't work, both Eriksson and the Canucks will want a trade.
I think the Canucks feel comfortable and on pace with goaltending, defence, and wing... it's center where they will want at least one very good draft pick, and at least one other prospect added to the ranks. Adam Gaudette has progressed well, but he's still an untested possibility.
Here are the chances the Canucks took on C prospects that appear won't pan out:
Laplante, Yan-Pavel (ECHL)
Carcone, Michael (2G Utica)
Zalewski, Michael (2G in Utica)
Cassels, Cole (2G in Utica)
They've added MacEwen and might add more, but they need someone with the speed/skill/sense that found ways to score at younger ages against bigger/older opponents.
