You guys are nuts if you think we should or will go into rebuild mode...
Not happening. Not my opinion either (although I'm happy it's the case). Anyone who's been following the Sharks' offseason knows that.
It seems like a better idea than missing the playoffs, which is what the 14-15 squad did.
CheechYou is right, you guys are nuts.. If you watched the sharks at all last season you would know that missing the playoffs was more of a fluke than anything. We did very well against top teams in the league but for whatever reason couldnt win against teams at the bottom of the standings. We didnt fail to make the playoffs because of lack of skill. It was more because we didnt have the right mentality to win night after night and we lost some close games down the stretch in part due to terrible officiating and injury problems. Hopefully electing an official captain, adding a new coaching staff, adding smart players with leadership ability, and a year and a half to forget about the 2013-2014 playoffs will fix this metality problem and restore confidence in the group. Missing the playoffs for the first time in 10 years isnt the end of the world. It doesnt mean we need to start a "rebuild" and make these trades (which we wont even be able to do because Thornton and Marleau wont waive their NMC's).. The only sensible thing to do is to make the team as talented as possible to give the sharks every chance to win while thornton and marleau are still under contract. A couple years ago DW went on record as saying he would complete a rebuild on the fly, which I think is almost complete, and I am fairly satisfied with. We are probably still an elite winger and a solid defenceman away from being a legitimate contender (assuming Jones and Stallock can contribute solid goaltending, which I think they should be able to). We will likely keep the roster mostly as it is for this season, which should be good enough to at least earn a wild card spot. However, if our prospects continue to develop well, we could be a serious contender a year from now, when players like goldobin and Mueller (possibly Meier, Bergman) should be ready to play full time, and players like Tierney, Hertl, Nieto, Jones will have another year of experience under their belt. Yes thornton and marleau will be a year older, but of the two I really on see marleau's play dropping. This team is two years away from even considering another rebuild.. and if they do, they will hopefully make trades that actually make the team better, unlike trading tierney, goodrow, and a second for silfverberg... but nice effort.
