We need wingers not centers. Love the addition it just would not be as helpful to get another center. Plus either he or Nino would have to go to resign the rest of the pending FAs.

Hertl plays wing just as effectively. Sharks would have to consider this trade I think.

I actually don't mind it. I think Hertl could play wing on the second line and pivot into C to take faceoffs on his strong side when needed. Plus I'd hope that we can re-sign either Hertl or Troch, kind of serves as insurance so that we don't lose both. I'm already prepared to lose Nino and think that's fine honestly with some of the young prospects we have coming up - in my head i'm treating him as our own rental.

I would do this trade from a Canes perspective - we don't need C's but it seems like Hertl can play wing just as effectively and can step in as a C situationally or if injuries arise, can never have too many C's imo.

This also serves as leverage / insurance with Troch. Canes would hopefully re-sign one of them and I'd be fine with it being either one.

Sharks could use the prospects to bolster Eklund and Bordeleau and Suzuki and Heimosalmi are both pretty excellent. This is only the 2nd good Hertl trade I have seen on here.

That makes sense - I'm going to run a similar thought through this year and next year to see how Canes would look w/ a Hertl extension. Where do you think that would land? 5x7?

7.5 minimum. He's worth every penny.

I would rather not lose Trocheck, but our RW are loaded. We need a bit of help for our top 6 LW. We have Svechnikov that we still need to resign, and then we have nino, but I would rather play nino on the third line with Staal. If hertl can learn to play LW, a line of Trocheck Hertl and Necas would be lethal. Nino already is going to be going so that we can resign Trocheck and Necas. Necas will likely end up making 4-6 mil on his next contract, plus Hertl and Trocheck would want raises. Cole and bear will also need to be resigned. The wild card in the resignings for next year would be ADA. If he performs well and keeps his mouth shut, maybe a 2x1.5mil contract would be next.

As it stands, the canes cup window would be 2-3 years. Defensively, the canes might be a little better, but offense from the d core is a bit lacking with the loss of Hamilton. Offensively, our forward core is about the same, but they are still missing that offensive top 6 winger, particularly at LW. Goaltending, is a big question mark. Statistically, our goalies are really good. But how will they perform behind a stacked d core. They should bounce back, but it depends on if they stay healthy or not. They probably win the metro and should be considered a real threat in the chase for the cup.

Yep, I'm on the same page with you. I'm assuming Hertl could slot in at LW on second line which would be a lot of fun to watch. Could also have Turbo play LW on second line and Hertl play RW on 1st line with Aho and Svech.

I'm creating a thread to see how a Hertl move this year would look next season with some of the moves you mentioned. I could see Cole either coming back on a cheap deal or having one of our young guys step up to save a bit of cap.

Hertl hasn't played his left side in SJ. We've always been short on RW. As a C, he is much better than Trochek if I am being honest.

He might be a better C than Trocheck, Trocheck fills a need that has plagued the Canes for many years. Trocheck is a RHC whereas Hertl is a LHC/RW. Canes haven’t had a RHC in the top 6 since, I can’t even remember when we had it last. Trocheck also filled the hole that was our 2C, and he did an amazing job of it.
