There's absolutely zero reason for SJ (or any team) to do that. Its just dumb.

The 3.5 mil is the retention on Eichel. Not the retention on Vlasic. Correct....

How is buying out vlasic while giving up one of our best prospects better than simply retaining on eichel ourselves and keeping johnson?

They get Hague and dont have to live with Eichels retention for 5 years. They buy out is like 700k at 50% in the final years

Wait San Jose is paying eichel and vlasic 6.5 million for 5 years for neither of them to play for them?

This is just --- no. This doesn't work for the Sharks.

You say this saves the Sharks "a lot of cap", but it really doesn't. If the Sharks just go ahead and buy Vlasic out at the end of next season, it looks like this:

    xBj3qZV

If the Sharks trade him to Buffalo with $3.5 retained, that means that all those savings cut in half when the Sabres buy him out. Sad, sure, but they've also only got half the cap hit too -- except that if they also retained $3 million on the Eichel deal, you have to account for that. So suddenly, instead of having a cap hit of $3,687,500 in '22-23 for Vlasic post buyout, they've got a cap hit of $4,843,750 for Vlasic and Eichel and so on and so forth.

I could be wrong! I could have made a mistake with my math -- things get tricky when you're looking at buy-outs with retained salary. But I think at the end of the day this would be more expensive for the Sharks than simply buying Vlasic out, and it comes at the cost of helping to make their arch-rivals a stronger team. Tell me again, how does this benefit San Jose?

So the sharks basically trade Vlasic at 7M for no one at 6.5M, that ain't gonna happen.

To the best of my knowledge, it is. This deal would be dandy for Buffalo and the Knights and the actual worst for San Jose.

Imo just do 2 1sts Eklund and vlasic with no retention for eichel, Bryson and a 4th.

If kanes contract is terminated, SJ can afford eichel and can keep hertl and make a non laughable claim to compete as the burns, Karlsson and couture contracts play out.

I mean, you're wrong about literally all of that second sentence, but even if you weren't, Vlasic has a full NMC and there's zero chance he waives that to go to Buffalo of all places.

Also, you guys had 12 more points than us and eichel missed over half the year and we played multiple ECHL goalies and had a soccer executive as our head coach half the year, so maybe ease up on how your situation is better than buffalo

Costs include totals from start of 21-22 season.

Cap hit if Sharks buyout Vlasic themselves: 28.25M
Cap hit if Sabres buyout 1/2 Vlasic and Sharks take 3M/5Yr retention on Eichel: 29.125M

Money cost if Sharks buyout Vlasic themselves: 20.75M
Money cost if Sabres buyout 1/2 Vlasic Sharks and take 3M/5Yr retention on Eichel: 23.225M

    Rather pointless

I do believe that was a legitimate ask from Buffalo to Vegas....but I think the reason why it hasn't happened already is because of the salary, the injury are the two obvious reasons.....Eichel is not going to be ready to play to start the season at this rate, and they're giving up a roster player like Smith or Tuch, or even both, that still will hurt them in the short term to not have a player in the lineup who can help them right now. I think the biggest dealbreaker in the deal is Peyton Krebs. I don't think that Knights want to let him go. Kelly McCrimmon spent years scouting him, and I don't think he's willing to part with him.

The Sabres will have to come down on the price, there simply are just not enough teams out there who have the assets, who can take him on under the cap, and who are willing to wait for him. The Sabres will want Krebs, they will probably have to settle for Brisson and Patrick
