Genuinely ask bc I haven’t watched Sharangovich play too much - is this really a lot to pay for Forsberg? Looking at his numbers he had a good year last year but before that all of his numbers are very pedestrian in all other leagues. I would imagine this is a huge upgrade for next year and with the Devils shaping up really nicely to contend soon, I could easily see Forsberg being pitched to sign long term there.

There’s a lot of risk in acquiring Forsberg right now as IMO he’s been regressing significantly in both production and play driving ever since 2018. On top of that, he could demand a sizeable extension and the Devils are in no position to give out term to contracts that may age horribly, they already got Hamilton for that plus a numerous big extensions of their own in the upcoming seasons. It’s not a star producer you’re trading for anymore, but a decent NHLer who may or may not be below replacement level in 2-3 years.

Sharangovich on the other hand, his numbers in the NHL this year were far beyond expectation at a glance but you’ll see that he was an impressive goal scorer in the KHL last fall. He’s only 23 so there’s room for him to improve, he has good versatility in his uses, a great shot which the Devils are lacking and he’s on a great contract only to be qualified at 2million.

Yeah I think that’s a lot to pay for Forsberg, with or without extension.

Forsberg is 26 and playing the best hockey of his career, while Erat was in his 30's and declining rapidly. JFresh posted Erat's WAR graphs on twitter recently, so take a look if you'd like. i understand the point you're making, but I think it's a fair trade.

Well, you made the trade so I would assume you think it is good, but also Sharangovich has a 76% WAR to Forsberg's 85% but also Forsberg is due to be a UFA and Sharangovich is 4 years younger. I would rather work with the younger guy when close.


Last season Sharangovich had 16g 14a for 30pts. Forsberg had 32. Granted Forsberg played fewer games, but I'll take Sharangovich's upside over Forsberg's UFA money on an extension (which I didn't see you mention anywhere but would HAVE to be in a deal like this).

Sharangovich is really fun to watch. He's got a WICKED wrister and he's fast. He grew up as a defensive first center and his coaches started telling him to shoot and he had a heater of the year starting in the KHL before coming to the NHL. He's also one of the most loved guys on the team from the fans with his great personality. He earned his way into playing with Jack. I can EASILY see him as a high 20s, low 30s guy in his peak if he's playing top 6, but he might get bumped to 3rd line on no fault of his own, just slotting because of Tatar if he plays with Hughes (Kuokkanen is the boards guy that wins battles), but Sharangovich will give teams without depth fits.

I don’t think NSH accepts the trade either. I think they’d rather just re-sign Forsberg. I don’t see what you see when you say he has been regressing significantly since 2018. Yes, he had a career year in 2018 but I wouldn’t consider going from 64 pts in 67 games to 32 pts in 39 games a significant regression, especially when Forsberg drives his line regardless of who he plays with.

That doesn’t tell the whole story of the past season. Forsberg had 2 more points and played 15 less games. You can’t just look at their point totals and not mention the number of games played.

The deal is contingent on Poile’s commitment to youth. Considering the Ellis trade, I figure he’s likely to try to roll the dice on an unproven prospect. And for you Sharangovich lovers in the comment section, he’s not worth as much as you think. He’s a 5th round pick who’s played one season and has shown potential. That’s a far cry from Forsberg: a proven NHL star.

Sorry, missed where you said that. I’m glad you would rather take a chance on Sharangovich because I’d rather take the proven NHL top line winger. I just think NSH is better off with Forsberg. Having an “older” presence on the team should be more important to NSH than adding another potential top six forward, especially when it’s only a guy that’s four years younger.

On the other hand though, I don’t think that you can compare the two players last season with the number of games each player played. I believe Forsberg was a point per game player, or at least very close before getting hurt. Would have been interesting to see if he could have kept it up had he not gotten hurt.
