Seth Jones was a UFA and Cale Makar was an RFA, so you can't really compare the two of them as they are evaluated differently. Fox is an RFA in 2022-23, thus he will be priced like Makar. While that certainly doesn't mean he won't be more expensive, it won't be by a margin of $500k.
It was Mika Zibanejad's agent/brother who initially asked for $10M at the beginning of negotiations. The front office would've already extended him if that was the money he was due. If I recall correctly, the Rangers desire something in the low 8 millions, most likely pushing his contract to also hover around $9M. Last offseason we saw Ryan Strome ask for $5.7M when the Rangers asked for $3.6M. He was eventually paid $4.5M before arbitration.
Honestly not sure what argument you're making about Seth Jones and Cale Makar. I am comparing them on gameplay, versatility, as they are similar players and they will most likely be evaluated in terms of money and term around the same amount. Adam Fox will get 9.5K for 8 years. If he gets more, he gets more, but I don't think it will be less than 9mil. He is the best defenseman in the league, he just won't get a bridge deal or anything like that. The UFA/RFA thing doesn't really matter because they base their contracts on their potential and what they can either continuously bring to the table or if they are declining. Yes, UFA's have a better chance to get more money because if they are good enough they have more chances at a higher value. RFA's yes maybe different, but it doesn't mean they have no say in their contract and everything, It only means their rights are restricted to that particular team. If they won't pay him, he will request a trade 100% He is that type of person in getting what he wants (Even if he wants to play on the Rangers, he will be that type of person. Part of the business).
The Mika thing, Its hard to tell because they wouldn't have extended him especially if they were (which they have been linked to) trying to trade for Eichel. If the Rangers get Eichel, Mika is gone.... There will be no room for both of their contracts and Mika will be the one to go. So that is why there has been no extension as they are waiting to find out what goes on with Eichel. If they don't trade for Eichel, they will work on a new contract extension with Mika and I think he will get 9mil+
