Literally the only way this makes any kind of sense

Description
Best case scenario for Dallas (and the only one that keeps Oettinger in the NHL) is Khudobin being traded & Bishop retiring. And guess what, this is STILL a significantly worse goalie tandem than Dallas had last season. Bottom line, the Stars goalie duo just got significantly worse all in favor of likely saving $1.3M of cap space...assuming Dallas can even trade Khudobin's full contract

My guess is Bish is LTIRetiring and Nill got worried that we were a Dobby injury away from only having Oetter. Letting Oetter go get 80% of the games in Cedar Park wouldn’t be the worst. This is our last year with Pavs and Rads. Def going for it

I see very little to dislike. Yes other teams are making more sexy moves. But Nill has done a solid job of addressing needs imho. Glendening is a decent Dickie replacement and a big upgrade on the face off circle, where we got our butts kicked last year. Not a huge fan of the fourth year for Suter, but I think he will be a good mentor for Harley and I got the impression the fourth year was the deal maker to get him here. Seguin and Rads are pretty impressive replacements for Kero and Rhett. Hopefully Dellandrea put in some work this offseason and is ready to compete at the NHL level. I think Nill has done a solid job of balancing being competitive this year and still having good pieces for when our current core hands things over to the new core

I had a similar reaction to eso when I first saw the Holtby signing but the more I think about it the more I think about it the more I agree with you.

For a team that Nill has admitted is in "win now" mode, stashing your organization's best goalie in the AHL to get 80% of the starts would be a colossal mistake. Holtby hasn't had a SV% above .900 in 2 years now & Khudobin is on the decline.

It makes less than zero sense for Dallas to put Oettinger in the AHL, given where this team currently is.

If Dobby and Holtby struggle, Oetter is a phone call and few hour drive away. Nothing wrong with more depth. I could easily see one of Dobby or Holtby in the press box if need be. Oetter, Harley, etc are going to be good NHL players. There’s nothing wrong with making them beat out a veteran or two for a spot. As long as they are fair and realistic about when the younger player is a better option

I was scratching my head at first too til I really considered what things would look like with Bish on LTIR. It’s a one year deal at a reasonable cap hit. Best case he returns to form behind a more structured team. Worst case he sits in the press box and Oetter gets NHL time or somebody grabs him off waivers etc. The only down side is it’s two million that could be used on another depth piece. But would that other depth piece be more valuable than goalie depth?

Harley & Oettinger are in two different boats. Harley isn't coming off of a year where he was statistically in the top half of the league in most statistical categories. Harley still has to prove himself. Oettinger doesn't.

Would you start Robertson off in the AHL as well? Or force him to beat out veterans for a roster spot? Or did he play well enough last season to prove that he's already better than just about any other option we have in the organization?

Now apply that same logic to Oettinger. Did he already prove last season that he was better than Khudobin? Yes. Should he have to go through training camp, without an NHL roster spot, to prove it again? No.

I’m just glad to have some goalie depth. We can argue over how they deploy it during the season. Lol
