It's hard to say that what they did was wrong, especially since they are exceeding most people's expectations. But if I were in charge of the team, I would've done something like this.

I know that the big reason for the Lucic signing was to protect McDavid, but here we are with Lucic and McDavid on separate lines. I would like to think that Hall-McDavid-Puljujarvi is a dream future for them, so Hall would stay. I know that it'd be hard for them to acquire a defenseman without giving up Hall, but given how badly St. Louis needs center help, RNH, Lander and a first seems more than reasonable for Shattenkirk (as long as he agrees to an extension, which is getting more likely, although it still probably wouldn't happen).

Chicago had interest in Yakupov right before he got traded to St. Louis, so the Oilers can make a deal with them for Ville Pokka, especially with the expansion draft coming up. THE CHICAGO TRADE IS THE BASE, NOT WHAT IT WOULD ACTUALLY COST FOR POKKA. It's hard to judge what Chicago thought Yakupov's value to be, and how much they value a player like Pokka.
