3,7mil in extra space to help sign a marque dman this offseason. plus an addition 2.250mil the following year + the 35% of keith.

in addition they would not need to worry about re-signing strome and still get a pick in a good spot to draft a cossa or winger.

in addition this deal wouldnt have chi taking neals albatross of a contract to move keith.

helps edmonton address a need upfront and move out a contract without buying it out. and chicago gets a young, cheap dman with solid upside in caleb jones( also a nice bargaining chip when trying to snag and sign seth).

How can Koskinen/Jones have more value than Keith/Strome? I mean since we trade down in the draft as well.

koski when in a 1b work load he is a decent BU goalie. he cant carry like a #1. For chicago they could use a 1-b to run shotgun with lankanen. He is not negative value like a james neal thats why he'd be the guy to move in edmonton.
koskinen has had a 906,917, and 900 sv% which is serviceable for a backup. retaining him to 50% means you get a 1-b/backup (nhl calibre goalie) for 2.25mil instead of running with malcom subban. Keith has been one of the worst dmen statistically over the last 3 years and (unlike koski) is signed for another 2 seasons.

btw saying strome and 4th is worth a 1st rounder is ridiculous. the guy had 1 good half-season in 18-19. since then he has 21G 34A 55Pts in 98GP playing with stud players and needs to be resigned next yr in a flat cap world which wont be easy. He's also coming off a down year also, having only 14pts.

jones plus the 3.77mil in immediate cap space and you get a goalie (with only a year left) gives assets in key positions for the hawks and provides very valuable cap freedom in a flat cap (not to mention the extra 2.25 next year when koski is gone + whatever strome ends up getting).

saying that keith is good at this point in time is a stretch. wherever he goes he would be best as a bottom pair option. Anybody taking on keith is exclusively adding him in the hopes he is still an nhl player so he can mentor. saying that mentoring has more value in a trade than actual on ice results though is a stretch.

The hawks get a young dman that slots in as a #4/5 with room to grow for cheap. and stay in a good position in the 1st round of the draft and walking into the offseason with flexibility to go on a dman bidding war.

The oilers take on the risk, additional cap, and lose a young dman. On the oilers end I did forget to add a 2023 2nd rounder going to chicago with the conditions on the pick hinging on if strome resigns. the oilers in return for the price get a depth forward and a veteran dman and stay in the1st round of the draft

Doesn't make sense man. Oilers take on more cap space, which isn't what we want to do, and Chicago trades down in the draft?

Oilers don't need higher pics, Chicago does.

I've since figured out the better deal would be to have neal for keith 1for1 then have jones + pick for strome.

This would allow chicago to get their seth jones bargaining chip, get some cap space via a neal buyout (which would total savings of 6.84mil) and have a decent young dman in the lineup.

Edmonton would get a veteran dman, a much needed winger to round out depth and (when koskinen is boughtout) go all in on trying to move kassian to seattle. this would allow edmonton to allocate cap more effctively and declutter the bottom 6 and sign one of the stud goalie free agents since skinner isnt projecting great konovalov is easily 2 yrs from even competing for a job

I mean, we could shoe horn a trade like that and lose 2 assets. Or just sign UFAs like Oleksiak or Martinez, Saad, Schwartz or Coleman, and still buyout kosk and sign a UFA goalie.

Forcing this trade to work doesn't really make any sense.

Martinez coming off a career yr wont be cheap. Coleman is almsot a consensus pick for hometown dallas unless someone grossly overpays and others are gonna be in bidding wars with other teams. Finding all holes to fill in FA doesnt build good teams and puts those that fish multiple key assets in fa in cap trouble rather quickly. If we shift neals money into some cap savings and a veteran thatll actually play im not opposed to it just money has to work
