Yeah probably! I mostly made this to argue with my friend and know literally almost nothing about GM stuff. Any contract in particular you think is off?

Why didn't you protect Jones in the expansion draft?

I like Jones, but I figured he was a likely candidate for Seattle to take and Nurse&Bear, Larsson&Oleksiak, Russell&Bouchard would be a good d-core to run with. With Lagesson and Broberg (hopefully) coming up I figured we could afford to take the hit on losing Jones.

Who did you protect though? I'm not seeing a logical protection plan that leaves out Jones.

Yeah, as Stauffer points out you could hold off the Larsson signing until July 18 and protect Jones. He's better than Russell IMO and would strengthen your bottom pairing. But if Larsson is signed ahead of the expansion draft then it makes sense to protect him.

Yeah that's a very good point. It seemed like the organization and the coaching staff had zero faith in Jones last season, which was disappointing to see. So Jones and Bouchard for the 3rd pairing? Would we still sign another D for our second pairing, or run Russell-Larsson? Or would you want Russell to be our 7th d-man?

I would say that you overpaid Yamamoto and Benson by about 1M each, they have no arbitration rights and will have to take a small bridge deal to prove themselves more. Both Oleksiak and Ullmark are about 500k-1M low. Other then that you did a fairly good job.

That's definitely a fair point! I had a tough time figuring out Yamo's contract as he was so good in his rookie year, but definitely hit a sophomore slump. $2M bridge sounds more likely. Benson as well sounds about right.

Take ~1M from Yamo and Benson, give 1M to Ullmark and Oleksiak. and my mistakes cancel each other out. Thanks for your input and positivity!

Yeah, for sure this team needs a 2nd pairing LHD. A short-term solution is fine (1-2 years) as Broberg and Samorukov are pushing for a job this fall and one of them may be ready for a top-4 job as soon as 2022.

Russell should be the 7th man at this point.
