Zajac can barely skate, he loses almost every board battle and he's an offensive blackhole. 2 points in 14 games with the ice time he was getting is awful- and no zajac is not a good defensive forward either, the 3rd line was actually better defensively without him.

Talk about an overreaction to the tampa series where the whole line struggled due to pageau’s injury. Saying he loses every puck battle is an absurd thing to say especially when the coach (trotz-best coach in the nhl) applauded him multiple times throughout the run in his pressers specifically stating how great he was in puck battles. To go along with that- saying he is not good defensively is just flat out false?? No other way to put it than it’s just a very inaccurate statement, he may not provide much offense but he’d give roster flexibility and was clearly liked by this regime and if you’ve been paying attention over the past few years, this regime doesn’t just focus on how good a player is offensively.

Zajac in particular struggled more than anyone on that line, even Pageau with his injury. I said he loses *almost* every board battle which is true - and Trotz mentioned that after his first two games (game 6 against PIT + game 1 against BOS) which was true but after that he looked fatigued and started to be much less effective -the thing is Zajac is old and slow and can't be effective for more than a few games, which is why he should be a 13 F. In the Tampa series Zajac was among the worst in expected goals against, which is the best way to measure defensive impact. If a player isn't going to be good offensively, they better be able to keep the puck in the offensive zone for extended periods of time, which Zajac can't do. The guy literally can't move, TB players were just skating circles around him. At least Michael dal colle is an elite forechecker (he was 2nd on the isles in puck recoveries this season) and can at least keep up in the modern NHL.
