Description

Times are hard
You’re afraid to pay the fee
So you find yourself somebody
Who will take good ol’ Loui

When you need a lil something
Cause Virtanen has got you down
That’s the time you’ll get me hunting
And you know I’ll be around

I’m a fool to sign your paperwork
Oh yeah
I don’t wanna sign your paperwork
No more
I’m a fool to do your paperwork
Oh yeah

VAN
  1. Fleury, Haydn
  2. Manson, Josh
Détails additionnels:
Vancouver prefers the RH shutdown oriented Manson over the LH two-way oriented Schmidt as he is a better match to play with Quinn Hughes. The single-year allows the Canucks better cap-flexibility in 2021-22 and they will have cap-space to re-sign him if there is synergy at the end of the season.

Haydn Fleury will have the opportunity to play a more prominent role in Vancouver and would represent a defensive upgrade over the aging Alex Edler.

The two-for-one nature of this trade is because Vancouver has a spare expansion draft protection slot on their defense. Anaheim risks losing a good defenseman (Lindholm, Fowler, Shattenkirk, Manson, Fleury) no matter if they go 7-3-1 or 8-1-1.
ANA
  1. Schmidt, Nate
  2. Choix de 6e ronde en 2021 (VAN)
Détails additionnels:
Anaheim receives the best defenseman in the trade—effectively trading the one-year of Manson for four-years of Nate Schmidt at a cost controlled amount.
2.
VAN
  1. Killorn, Alex
  2. Choix de 3e ronde en 2023 (TBL)
Détails additionnels:
Veteran two-way winger that will provide needed scoring depth, responsible two-way play, and physicality on the wing. His playoff experience will be very important if the Canucks return to the post-season.

He is also signed for a reasonable amount for only two-more seasons. His contact ends right when the Canucks will need to re-sign Horvat and Miller. If he begins to hit his age curve ahead of then—he is a relatively cheap player to buy-out during the 22-23 off-season at only a 1.5m cap hit
TBL
  1. Ferland, Micheal
  2. MacEwen, Zack
Détails additionnels:
Ferland is an asset to Tampa, who will use his LTIR space next season to navigate the cap with their other injured players.

MacEwen is a credible depth player making nearly the league minimum. Watch Tampa turn him into a reliable middle-nine winger.
3.
VAN
  1. Choix de 4e ronde en 2021 (PHI)
Détails additionnels:
Philly looks for veteran depth capable of 1A/1B with Carter Hart. Hopefully they watched those games this year against the Leafs where Holtby was REALLY good and not those other games against the Habs, Flames, Oilers, Jets, etc...
PHI
  1. Holtby, Braden (1 800 000 $ retained)
  2. Choix de 7e ronde en 2021 (VAN)
Détails additionnels:
Canucks retain 40% of Holtby's final year. More expensive than if they were to simply buy-him out. But it keeps the cap-hit isolated to just 2021-22.

Themes for this roster:

(1) Make use of the Canucks spare expansion protection spot on defense.

(2) Take advantage of other cap-strapped teams.

(3) Eat you cap-hit medicine in 2021-2022—avoid any buy-outs.

(4) Maximize cap-space for 2022-23 and 2023-24 to re-sign your core players.

(5) RH center depth prioritized—Bozak ticks all the boxes (RH faceoffs, PK, can slide around middle-six)

I thought you'd like a break from trading Zegras and Drysdale for Marner.

And yea I would. But Fleury was a hidden gem for us and I wouldn’t wanna risk losing him.

A fun part of this AGM is you can feel the shade on Benning from those sensible conservative UFA deals it puts his past malarkey in perspective perfectly

Drop the 3 seen way too many offers of a 2 on here for Killorn. MacEwen doesn't move the needle and Ferlands LTIR really only saves Vancouver the real dollars being the uninsured portion of the contract. Killorn costs Vancouver at least a 3 to TB

I actually really like this, it checks off all the boxes that need to be sorted out, trades seem fair and doesnt hinder the canucks for next year.

I see your points:

RE:MacEwan—I think MacEwan is a take it or leave asset and doesn’t really need to be included if there is not a clear role for him in the Tampa org. I will reiterate that I think there is something there and that a team with more depth that has already shown an aptitude for successfully developing AHL-NHL tweeners like him into useful middle-six forwards could find a diamond in the rough with him. Worst case his salary is small enough that he could be buried in the AHL without an NHL cap hit.

RE: 3rd Round Pick—I think all of us are foolish to predict how the flat cap and expansion will affect the trade market this off-season. I observe that Tampa seems to be in a tough spot if they were to move forward without placing a big ticket on LTIR again this off-season. If Tampa is really in tight and they want to protect certain players and are forced to move particular pieces they may not have much leverage. It could very easily go the other way though and teams are clamoring to get cost controlled wingers for short term deals–if the market goes that way than yes I could see it being the Canucks sending the draft pick. Even in that scenario I don’t see it being more than a mid round pick.
