Quoting: Larkinisking
No thanks the only way Nyquist winds up in Edmonton is if Eberle comes to Detroit. Don't want or need Fayne he's garbage Nyquist will get a better package then this.
Dude, I know Fayne is garbage. That's why he's buried. He's included to balance numbers. But he comes off the books after next year and may make EDM more likely to move Benson. Benson is an A-/B+ prospect and a second round pick is nothing to scoff at. This would be a good package for Nyquist. Could we do a little better? Maybe...but it's not too far off.
Why do you want Eberle? He is expensive and his contract is up in two years. If the organization is truly retooling then he will need a new contract just as we are starting to get a good supporting cast for Larkin, AA, Mantha, etc...on the other hand, if we trade for young, cost controlled assets we are establishing better organizational depth for when the current young guys need big $$$. Benson may not be the 50 goal scorer that Eberle was in the WHL but he projects as a solid winger. His contract is slide eligible for next year which means his ELC wont expire for FOUR years.
As for the SJS deal...same theory except Vanek is rental. Roy is a solid D prospect which you can never have enough of. Could we get a second rounder instead of the third? maybe...but they don't have one until 2020. Roy is slide eligible so again, he has time to develop and remain cheap. I think MTL and a couple other places may be a more likely destination for Vanek but I already messed around with those and wanted to try something new.
In summary I think our philosophies just differ. You want established names that make the wings better this year and next year. That's fine, but I simply disagree. I think we need to invest in youth, speed, and cap flexibility. Do you honestly see us competing for a cup in the next two years after we trade Nyquist for Eberle? Because if not then Eberle is literally useless in rebuilding the organization unless you're going to give him his big 7 year extension when he's 28.
