Description
McDavidfan97 suggested I try this scenario. I don't think Neal will be on LTIR next year, but lets run with it anyhow.

The Oilers have over $30M in cap space in this scenario.

I like Grubauer even if he isn't a "60-game starter" as I think the future is in tandems and Koskinen is a very good goalie with a strong partner. Konovalov / Skinner are on their way to replace Koskinen for 2022 and Cossa is in the system for 2025-ish.

I chose to leave the defense largely alone (wrt UFA's) as I think this group is solid-to-good and there is some high-end talent coming via the farm (Broberg, Samorukov) and UFA (the 2022 UFA class is pretty deep and strong). Larsson gets 3 years in order to get him to sign... my plan is to target Seth Jones/Parayko summer of 2022 and trade Larsson at that point, the term is insurance in case that doesn't work out. Nurse will get signed as well, of course.

Up front is where I made the most changes, choosing to bring in a bunch of veterans on short-term deals on the same basis that Barrie signed last fall - to use Edmonton as a spring-board to a larger contract. (Media guys are talking about Barrie getting a Faulk / Krug deal this summer, which is too rich for my blood.) I don't mind if Hall prices himself out of the Edmonton 2022 budget as I'd rather target Forsberg that summer anyhow. I gave term to Nuge because he's a fan fav and a very versatile player. Coleman got 3 years as there's not much risk of his play falling off IMO, and I used the extra cap space to sign Yamamoto to a long-term deal rather than the likely bridge.

granlund will get more and I can't picture Hall going for that little at this point.

I'd suggest shooting for a Hartman, he's playing great as a 3C in MN and brings the kind of grit and skill combo edmonton needs.

What happens if Klefboom comes back, Neal doesn't fake any injury and Seattle takes Lagesson or Bear???

For that price It'll be difficult for Grubauer not to re-sign with Colorado...

Coleman's agent hangs up on that PATHETIC OFFER . A minimum 7 teams easily outbid that. Why does Zajac whose said he wants to stay in the NY Metro area sign in Edmonton? Granlund gets more especially on a 1 year deal!

    - Klefbom hasn't had surgery yet, he won't be back for TC for sure although it's possible he returns at some point during the year. Unlikely, though.
    - Neal isn't injured, but as I explained in the intro this is based on the unlikely scenario he gets marooned on Robidas Island this summer.
    - Seattle can't take Bear as I would protect him. Lagesson is a possibility... if that happens, obviously it follows that less money will be spent on UFA's - or maybe Yamamoto gets bridged.
    - Grubauer is just one of many UFA goalies this summer. It could be someone else, I agree that Grubauer probably stays in COL.

Interesting, I'll look at him a little closer. He's not a UFA though, so there would have to be a trade involved.

Flat-cap pricing. Granlund went from $5.75M to $3.75M on a show-me deal and is performing even worse this year. Honestly this is a massive overpay based on his performance this year and last.

Maybe other teams go higher for Coleman, but he's a bottom-6 winger (albeit a decent one) and at nearly 30-years-old isn't worth much more than this offer.

On the Stanley Cup Champs he's a middle six who scored 20 goals last year but your paying and playing him 4th line time he signs elsewhere

Yea the Neal on LTIR scenario is pretty unrealistic but it's fun to consider the possibilities. I don't wish injury upon him but he's been mysteriously "unfit to play" at times this season. Possibly Covid after-effects so you never know. I might be reaching, maybe he's just out of shape lol

Hall contract makes sense imo. I've seen people say he wouldn't go for a 1 year deal at $6.5 but I can't see him getting many bigger offers. He could inflate his stats with McD and get 1 last big deal with money and term, somewhere else. Unless he likes the fit here and takes a team-friendly deal. When his deal ends we can be certain there's money left for Bear, Nurse and Pulju raises, then reassess the 1st line LW situation, maybe Holloway fits there, or another cheap "show me" contract. I'd understand if Holland passed because of his history in Edmonton though. Iaffolo could be a backup option, I'm sure he'd like to pump up his stats for cheap with McDavid

3rd line looks solid. Replacing Kassian with Granlund could work out well. A 2 year deal could work for Granlund imo, and he could be replaced by Lavoie or another prospect. I'd be somewhat concerned that Zajac takes a steep decline at 36 and we're left scrambling to fill the 3C spot with a 4th liner, yet again. Zajac does have a good FO% and seems to be a solid defensive player, so in theory, he would be a great addition but there's a bit of risk. I'm starting to prefer a 3C with 2 years of term so we can keep the same group of guys together for longer, and pass that role to McLeod or Holloway when they're 100% ready

Larsson deal times well with either Kemp, Kesselring or another prospect getting a chance to fill that spot. Grubauer contract times well with Skinner/Konovalov taking the starter role, with Cossa as backup (I also think we'll take Cossa if he's available when we pick + if we keep our pick. Top tier goalie prospect from Edmonton, makes a lot of sense). If we manage to get Coleman on the 4th line I'd be extremely happy. Would definitely lower the defensive responsibilities of our top guys, and create some more depth scoring

I'd like Martinez in the top 4 over Jones if we manage to make the money work. Maybe if Yamo takes a bridge we could afford it. I think he'd supply good veteran leadership and be a good mentor for Bouch on a 1-year deal. Broberg would take his job the following season. Plays well in his own end and chips in some offence. He can still lead by example. He's won cups, could be helpful in the playoffs

Overall I'd be very happy if things played out like this

The wild got him because he's eligible for a QA as an RFA, but teams are less willing to pay him thinking he's just a grinder, but he's been playing like a guy who should be making 3m. Doesn't seem behind the ball whoever he's on the ice with.
