Midseason Prospect Pool Assessment

Description
I think there's been enough playing time among the prospect pool this season to reassess their max potential. Pretty much anyone in the Forward positions are players I see as having NHL potential, with the only locks being those in the LW position. Left Defense are players I doubt will get out of the AHL. Right Defense are players I have not seen or read enough on to be confident in putting a projection to their names.

If you want clarification on the reasoning for any player's position, feel free to ask.

I like Fortier, but he's cooled off offensively since the start of the AHL season. If he can keep his offense up, he'd probably get to the NHL much sooner.

Goncalves blew me away in his 1 game with Syracuse. His on-ice tenacity immediately reminded me of how Gourde, Goodrow, and Coleman play but also with extremely accurate passing ability.
I would say his earliest arrival in the NHL is probably something like Cirelli's. Spend his first pro season in the AHL, and then probably force his way onto the Lightning permanently during his first callup in his 2nd pro season. That would be 22-23.

Interesting concept, I like it.

One guy I used to be really high on was Taylor Raddysh; not sure if he has what it takes to make it anymore but would like to see him succeed!

I think I did something similar at the start of the season, but I've since decided to get AHL TV and pay a little more attention to the future of the franchise.

Raddysh along with Katchouk seem like they've both underperformed their potential for years now since they were drafted in the 2nd Rd in 2016.
Raddysh was called up to the taxi squad last week, so, his NHL debut could be imminent. It'll be interesting to see if he can carve out a role.

That’s awesome I just watch Syracuse game highlights on YouTube. Are the games entertaining?

I tend to only watch games that don't overlap Lightning games, but I find them exciting. Defense can be a little spotty (especially Syracuse's) at the AHL, so, that leads to a lot of back and forth. However, they aren't all players with NHL finishes so it doesn't always show up on the score sheet.

Interesting that you have Goncalves a tier higher than Finley. I know Goncalves looked good in Syracuse but how has Finley looked recently.

He played 2 games with Syracuse and looked invisible (for lack of a better word) when on the ice. He wasn't really creating anything. He's a boom or bust project, and probably has a longer path to the NHL than Goncalves as a result. I don't think his WHL season has began yet, but I'm interested in seeing if he can match his scoring pace from last season.

Ok makes sense. Also, what’s your assessment on Powell vs Thompson? I love players that come out of BC and Powell seek likes a great prospect to have. Any major differences between Powell and Thompson?

I'd say Thompson is more of a shooter and offensive oriented than Powell. Powell I'd label as more of an all rounder. I've only seen highlights on them this year, but Powell playing on BCs 2nd pairing as a freshman compared to Thompson playing in the 3rd tier league in Sweden has me more impressed with Powell.

I like that you recognized the development of Walker and Shalagin as potential NHL players. A lot of people are quick to write them off because they were 7th round picks. Hopefully either of them could turn out to be another 7th round gem similar to Pally.

They both seem to be progressing well. Walker has slowly been improving at Minnesota. Shalagin was rough in his first North American season last year with Orlando after coming from the MHL (where I've heard defense doesn't exist), but he's averaging a point per game on his team's top line in the VHL. I think he's made the move to RW too. Shalagin is a very intriguing prospect if he can get his offensive game to transfer to the AHL/NHL with his size. I wonder if he'll try the KHL or come over to Syracuse next year.

Good to hear they are both steadily progressing. We could use some solid winger prospects as I feel the move to RW will help him have a better shot at making the NHL or having success in Syracuse.

I've found a lot more of our prospects are wingers than what Capfriendly has them listed as:

Barre-Boulet --- RW
Shalagin --- RW
Koepke --- LW
Huntington --- LW/RW
Goncalves --- played LW in his AHL debut
