Description
First and foremost, De Haan and Carps need to be moved; neither are part of our long term plans IMO and neither bring enough experience, leadership and a resume to offer something more or different then Keith, Seabs, Toews and Kane already do so IMO they need to be moved.

That said, this is going to be a year to see what many of the prospects bring and new additions can bring; let's be clear...the Blackhawks aren't in a position to be able to compete. However, that doesn't mean this won't be an interesting team to watch.

Defense: Keith and Mitchell could be a big home run. Love the idea of Zadarov and Boqvist together either as a 2nd or 3rd pairing. Murphy and Carlsson provided one of the best pairings last season in terms of a shut down pair and no reason not to give it a good chance again as a 2nd or 3rd pairing. At some point, Kalynuk gets a shot when Carlsson struggles and vice versa. Seabs will play a 7th man role ideally and in part, this may encourage him to waive and possibly go to Seattle as part of the next offseason activity.

Offense: This is a bit of a mish mash of prospects and then Janmark and Wallmark. Can Wallmark make Strome expendable? Does Janmark bring that much of a improvement over Carps and are either needed with Hagel and Highmore plus Kampf in the center? How much hockey does Shaw have left in him given his concussion history? Will Nylander develop...this is a make it or break year for him IMO. What can Suter and Kurashev bring to the table, do either have top 6 potential on the wing? A lot of interesting things to watch in this rebuild/retool up front this season.

Goaltending: Are any of the 3 going become a legitimate starter? My guess is no but that is okay. We will see what we have as a long term backup player, move at least one of them, and upgrade next year in the offseason.

Signed Duclair just for the heck of it plus we don't have many RW prospects or options in the top 9.

2-3 years from now this team completely melts down. Until then, they limp by on insane Kane play. So I guess is pray for that Wright kid or Michkov because right now we’re hoping for Nylander to somehow go from potential bust to solid top 6 contributor.

Nah, it won't completely melt down. You have to remember, this past season we were the youngest team in the playin rounds, 4th or 5th youngest in the league and we are getting even younger in the next year.

We'll get a lottery pick this year likely to add another solid prospect or 2 in the draft also.

On defense we are looking really solid with a very strong prospect pool including; Mitchell, Boqvist, Carlsson, Kalynuk (maybe), Beaudin, Regula, and Vlassic (maybe); albeit we need a legitimate 1st line LHD prospect but there are few options in the top 10 picks in this coming draft so we can hopefully get the lottery pick and then we are able to address it in the draft for a top notch player ready to step in within 2 to 3 seasons. This will evolve from being our weakness the last 2 seasons to being a strength in the next 3 seasons with these young kids developing and developing. This also provides the perfect timetable for Keith, Seabs and Murphy to hand over the reigns to the young kids.

Up front we have young solid top 6 guys in Debrincat, Kubalik, Dach, Strome. Out of Kurashev, Suter and Nylander it shouldn't surprise anybody if one of them ends up being a top 6 player even if the other 2 go back to the AHL we are okay but 2 of those could end up 3rd liners and if not, 3rd line players are easy to acquire. Hagel and Highmore are going to be excellent 4th liners centered by Kampf who is a very good defensive center for the 4th line. Toews will eventually become a 3rd liner in a few years and be extremely solid in that role. Kane will be a top 6 for another 5 years. This group has potential.

Goaltending is the biggest issue but clearly the cap is shaping up to be working in our favor in a few years with all these young players allowing us to bring in a vet if one of our prospects or Subban doesn't work...which is highly likely.

Someone should offer sheet Strome for like 5 million AAV
The hawks have 5.2 in cap space, but that's with Seabrook and Shaw combining for 10.7 on the LTIR
Seabrook will most likely be ready for the start of the season and carries a 6.8 AAV where as SHaw will most likely remain on the LTIR with concussion symptoms.
So do the hawks need to make moves before Seabrook comes back?

@ChiHawk I Hope I eat my words, but I think the prospect pool in the system has enough potential to push the Toews, Kane, Keith to another low odds cup run in a couple years and that’s it. 2-3 years from now we have to really expect Toews and Keith to fall off. So are Dach, Debrincat, and Boqvist at 25-27years old gonna be putting up the numbers to carry the old men to hoist another cup or one on their own? That’s why I think we fall apart in 2-3 years. That’ll be the true downfall from mediocre team to bottom feeder. Hawks need a Owen Power/Shane Wright caliber player who can possiblyturn a franchise around. I’m just really afraid of being stagnant to be honest because as of now hope is low because that’s a lot

No, that space includes both Shaw and Seabs on the roster not with them on LITR.

Hawks would take a 1st and 3rd for Strome if there is an offer sheet and perhaps that is what they are waiting for. However, the teams that have that kind of cap space are teams that would be a mid first likely not a very late first.

So let's fast forward 3 years and here's what I see

Kubalik - Dach - Kane
Debrincat - Strome - Reichel
Suter (Kurashev) - Toews - Nylander (multiple free agents)
Hagel - Kampf - Highmore

(Owen Power, Edvinsson or Lambos...all first line potential) - Mitchell
Carlsson (Kalynuk) - Boqvist
Keith (Beaudin or Vlassic) - Regula

Goalie
Lakinen, Subban, Delia or acquiring a veteran starter
Backup = Drew C

The point is, there are multiple ways this can work out and understanding Toews will likely be a 3C and Keith a bottom pairing in 3 years and Seabs gone. Reichel and Mitchell are probably the players with the most unknowns that they need to fullfill their expectations. If those two don't, it might be problematic but if they do then things will fall into place. Dach has already proven he has the tools to be a 1C. Strome is only 23 still and plenty of upside. Cat and Kubalik already have proven what they bring in top 6 roles. Kane is Kane still in 3 years. 3rd line guys are the easiest to acquire if none of Suter, Kurashev, Barratt, Nylander work out which is highly unlikely as 1 if not 2 will make it on the 3rd line. The best part is, they are going to have more cap space to work with in 3 seasons so plenty of options. These guys, not this season, but next season and the season after may squeeze into the playoffs but in 3 and 4 years they have a shot to contend.

That all said, many Hawks fans are spoiled by being a dominating franchise for 10 years so recently that they forget how rare Stanley Cups are. I've been a diehard fan since 1990 and after 30 years, 3 cups is even a lot for most teams. The goal is for these guys to make the playoffs in 3 years and get through a round or two, if they can do that then anything happens as the Stanley Cup is the most unpredictable year to year of any of the major team sports.

In looking at the teams with the cap space to offer sheet Strome at $5M-4 of them are potentially lottery picks (Sens, Red Wings, Devils, Kings) and I'm not sure Panthers, Predators and Blue Jackets are strong Cup contenders-no offense intended but I'm guessing those picks could be in the 15-25 range. I probably would let Strome go and take the 1st & 3rd for him. I do think Strome is a good 2nd line center. He's not arb eligible yet so the Blackhawks could offer him 1yr at $3M and worry about a 3-4 year deal next offseason.

I actually don't mind this. Instead of Duclair, Id suggest bringing in someone who is tough and give young guys space to get confidence. Outside of that, this is pretty much the only post I've seen with promise.
