I honestly don't know if Laine is > the cumulative impact of all the players jettisoned to make his cap hit work. Donskoi, Jost, Cole all quality. PEB has use.

You can get Laine for less than that. As to what I remember, Laine isn't protected much from being traded away from Winnipeg, so I believe you can get a better deal than that.

Agreed. It makes sense from both a hockey and cost-control perspective to keep Byram.

I honestly think Toews comes in at probably $.5-.75M less than that, probably for 3-4 years. Gryz' recent contract is a good comparable.

I get the appeal of Laine, I really do, but bringing in someone like that at the expense of the long-term effectiveness of the D corps is a concern and now you've got another high-priced guy to pay right now. Losing a good but low-priced young D plus adding a high-priced goal-scorer would appear to blow the budget.
