TrueNorth: You're right, that would be a very good deal for Trouba. Whether it's agent advice or Trouba's thoughts, he does have the option of not signing a contract. Imagine what happens when Trouba now goes into GM Chevy's office. OK we agree to 5 years at 5.4m contract. Chevy counters with a Dumba offer of 2.6m, or Kucherov 4.7m a year for 3 years.
Worse for Trouba IMO is that he has narrowed the trading partners that Chevy may have had a few months ago. Disgruntled 22 year old players aren't very welcome on many teams. I wonder 10 years from now, when we think of Trouba do we think of a good Dman who might have had some All Star appearances or about a guy who seemed on the verge of second layer stardom, who ends up being a marginal player in the NHL.
A note of Larkinisking comment: Needs to be closer to home...maybe so, but from a NHL ownership view,,,,so what? There are 30 teams in the NHL, and players know where they are know the restrictions of player movement once a player signs a contract. Let's imagine that Trouba "only wants Detroit", The Wings currently may not want to anything to do with him for contract and their own reasons of having a demanding 22 year old on their team. Trouba might be playing hockey in Detroit just not on an NHL team.
