This is an optimistic take. It’s a helluva lot easier to move from centre to the wing as centre has a load of responsibilities, starting with the 2-way play that guy mentioned. Solid, consistent defensive play by Lafreniere, supporting the blueliners and playing a way he never has before, is not something that can be brushed off with “but Panarin is good at hockey,” that’s not even who we’re talking about here?? On top of that there’s faceoffs, Lafreniere would be going against guys who have been winning faceoffs for 25 years, the Rangers would never have the puck. It’s not an easy adjustment to make, and it’s not one he’s thought about making so it’s not like he’s tried it. Does he have the skillset to develop into that? Maybe eventually, but he won’t have as much of an immediate impact as he would if he played his natural position.
