Trading 8th overall shouldn’t be in the plans of Kevyn Adams.

I am fine if we do. I am not too high on Domi, but if we acquired Domi, and another top 6 RW, that could be the foundation of a playoff team next season.

If they stay healthy they will be in the picture for sure. Skinner will bounce back for sure, Kahun is a very nice depth players, Domi gave a very good secondary scoring option behind Eichel. Reinhart and Olofsson are solid. Mittelsadt, Thompson and Smith are question mark but maybe one of them will step up. Cozen is seen as a top prospect around the league. Defensively Dahlin is already very good he will just be even better. Brodie is a very solid 2 way defenseman who can eat up big minutes playing him with a Risto could just help him. Ullmark and Hutton have been failry good this year i am sure they can keep up next year.

This team will compete, but they still won’t be good, plus the Peguals don’t have a lot of money to spend due to cap pentalies and no revenue for both the Bills and Sabres. It’s probably going to be a quiet offseason. Plus Thompson has only taken 29 Faceoffs in his short career so Lazar will be back.

Cozens shouldnt be in the NHL this year, let alone the second line. We need to develop our prospects. We keep rushing them, like Edmonton used to do. Sign depth to 1 and 2 year deals, and save some years on our ELCs.

Cozens will be fine he can’t play in the AHL, and he’s dominated the WHL for two years.

He would probably be shop at the deadline if Juulsen and Fleury can step up. But he would be a insurance policy in case that both of them could fill the Petry void.

If we keep Petry, then Fleury and Juulsen are more than fine. (Especially since Juulsen is waiver eligible) If we lose Petry, we’re going to need someone far better than Miller to fill his void.

Miller is a fine defenseman, sure he isn’t Petry’s good but he can be a good defenseman. He had a down year in Buffalo but had been good the 3 season prior. You might not like him but that doesn’t make him a bad defenseman. He isn’t Petry but Montreal will have decisions to make next year with all the contract renegotiation they have pending. I like Petry but i think he will walk into free agency unless Montreal overpay him on is next contract so we better move him and get a good return for him since he hold a great value. Montreal will be competitive probably in 3-4 years and are better to acquire young players that will growth with the young core then resign old players, we already have Price and Weber that will be there, we don’t need another old players stuck on a long term deal.

I like Miller, but I just think that we need a #1 defenseman to replace Petry, since we can’t rely on Weber alone as he continues to age. Ideally we have Petry in that role (with Weber being an important piece) for the next 2-3 years after we re-sign him until a younger RHD that we draft or trade for in the next 2 years can replace him.

Petry won’t resign for 2-3 years deal he will want long term deal that he will get on the open market. Mtl can afford to commit long term with Petry with Romanov Norlinder, Brook, Fleury , Juulsen and Harris in the system. And they got Drysdale with Buffalo pick so they have that number 1 defenseman that will be picking up over Weber in 3 or 4 season so Petry is better to be traded then lose on the open market for absolutely nothing since the habs won’t be a playoff team next year

I think that you’re undervaluing Petry’s desire to stay in Montreal, and the impact that the flat cap will have on the market. I would be surprised if anyone gives out long term contracts to anyone over 30. I think that something around $7Mx3 years is a reasonable deal for Petry (Comparable to Muzzin, who will be 2 years younger when the contracts start, with a year longer on the contract. So Petry is 36 when his contract ends, while Muzzin is 35). As for RHD for the habs, no one in the org. is able to fill Petry’s role, and a good #4D is probably the highest ceiling of the bunch. Getting Drysdale at 8/9 would change everything, but it’s very unlikely that happens. If we did get Drysdale, I’d certainly prefer we sign Petry, but it wouldn’t be a big deal if we don’t.

That the whole point of my post. If you would have take the time to look at it. If we get Drysdale with that pick then Miller can play this year and Drysdale is likely to come in 2021-22 season and One of Fleury or Juulsen will be playing the third tole on the right side so Petry is becoming expendable and i traded him to get a return not to lost him on open market for nothing. And i think you underestimate the power of Money and work security. Petry will be 32 almsot 33 when he will sign is new deal. He will be looking for yhe biggest deal possible since it very might be is last lucrative deal.

That’s fair. Although I don’t know why it would be any different for Petry than it was for Muzzin. For context, other than Muzzin, no defenseman over 31 has signed a contract longer than 3 years since July 2015, 5 years ago. And there’s a grand total of 3 players in the past 13 years. And that’s even including when the league had way more older players than it does now. IMO $7Mx3 years is market value for Petry at 33 years old.

Actually Mark Giordanno was 32 when he sign is extension , same for brent Burns. Both where sign after jumy 2015 and both olayers was over 32. Johnny Boychuk sign a 7 years deal at 31 years old in 2015. Seabrook sign a 7 years deal at 31 in 2016-17. Vlassic sign a 7 years deal at 32 last season. Andy greene is another example So there have been long term deal for older defenseman and in recent year. Just those one make it more then 3 and i don’t even count the forward. Zuccarello last offseason, james neal, kesler and there more. There been precedent so petry will be looking at it for sure.

Giordano, Vlasic, & Burns were a mistake, since CapFriendly listes them as 31, since they signed extensions a year before their contracts started. Anyways, 4/5 of the players mentioned were players who were re-signing with their team that is compensating them for all that they’ve done for their organization. Which highlights a very important change in how the NHL works. In the last few years the NHL has moved further and further away from paying a player based on what they’ve done (ie. Brent Seabrook) and instead paying them for what they will do (ie. Jack Eichel). So teams will pay Petry for the 2-3 good years that he’ll have before he gets too old, not what he’s already done.

the history of contract show that players are get paid for what they done so Petry will get paid and will have term. You just said that 3 players had sign a +3 years deal that where over 31 and i just found 8or 9 of them in a couple of minutes. Each year team gave big contract and term for aging players. Giordano was 47 day from 32 years old when he sign is extension but 32 when it kick in as for burns he was 4 month away from 32 so don’t try to be a smartass. Both where the same age as Petry is and managed to get massive deal. Petey just came of 3 back to back oustanding season he will get paid and will get term. Maybe not 8 years but there a team that will give him at least 5 years maybe 6 at a 6 millions range.

I literally just said I made a mistake with Burns, Giordano, & Vlasic. Calm down. Like I said, I was going by CapFriendly’s signing age, which doesn’t take extensions into account, so some players were listed as a year younger than I was looking for.

As for the getting paid for what you’ve done, that trend has been that recently (and I mean in the last 2-3 years) that it has been getting away from that. For example, Zuccarello was the oldest player signed on July 1st last year, who signed until he’s 36. If Petry signs a 3 year deal, he will be 36 when it’s done. Other than older players signing 1 or 2 year contracts, the only July 1st free agent signing that lasts past 36 years old is Ilya Kovalchuk, who was obviously in a unique situation. GMs are smarter now, and no one’s going to make that kind of mistake.

And Gms are desperately in need of good defenseman so Petry will draw major attention on the market and that why he will get term and money. Detroit is hometown could very be a team that offer him 5 maybe 6 years they have ton’s of space and they will need veteran leadership. Winnipeg will also be looking at a right handed defenseman. Vegas could also be interested in him. And there probably 10 to 12 team that will offer him at least 3 year deal.
