I have no idea how you can justify having Fox or Elvis ahead of Hughes

Fox was all-around better than Hughes.

Well quite simply I believe Elvis was the 10th best goalie in the league this season, he had a great rookie season and he deserves recognition.

And Fox is just plain better than Hughes is as an all around player. This is a pretty simple stat, but very telling; Fox had the best +/- among NYR defenseman (22), while Hughes had the worst +/- among VAN defenceman (-10). And we all know Hughes wasn't being used as a defensive defenseman.

Why would you justify having Hughes higher than Fox? Besides having more points, there really isn't a case to be made.

Well, for one thing, Fox is on the Rangers 3rd pair which means he spends much less time against the opponent's top lines. Which could be the reason behind a +22 vs -10 even though plus-minus is a bull**** stat. If you would like to compare how complete each player is I would look at the percentage of chances for vs against while on the ice at even strength. Which shows Hughes having 52.7 and Fox having a 51.7. Hughes also averages 3 minutes more of ice time each game putting him 2nd on his team. While Fox is seventh among Rangers skaters. Hughes also helped take a powerplay that was one of the worst in the league last year to top 5 this season. You also seem quick to dismiss his point totals but I would like to point out that this is the most points by a rookie defenseman since Nick Lidstrom. So yes I would agree there is no case to be made.

So? Slavin is a better all-around defenseman than Josi or Carlson but he's definitely not in the conversation for the Norris

Well, exactly, he's already better than Hughes so why would Hughes have the edge?

Selke is way too subjective for me to pick.

Are you saying if Fox had more icetime he could have done more? wink

Edit:
I don't think +/- is a BS stat. It's a simple stat, it needs to be used with context. For example comparing Fox's +22 to Hughes -10 would not be fair since they play on different teams. Comparing Fox's team leading +22 to Hughes' team worst -10 is relevant though.

? We arent talking 75 pts vs 36 pts here we are talking 53 vs 42. Is 11 more points big enough to close the gap? In my opinion no.

I have no bias here and have no personal agenda to support Fox or Hughes, this is my objective look at the two players.

Meanwhile, you are a Canucks fan, so I think you have a little favoritism with Hughes.

@boknowshockey53 btw:

Fox Primary PTS / 60 = 1.270

Hughes Primary PTS / 60 = 1.250

So fox is the better primary point producer now too? Basically Hughes has more secondary assists than Fox and that's all he has going for him?
