Who cares what Tavares was offered. All you fans in Toronto talked about was the hometown boy taking a hometown discount to play for his hometown team. He’s not worth 11M I don’t care what he was offered. He doesn’t wanna sign for what he worth then fine let him walk. Like I said Toronto is no better with him than without.
And as for Matthews and Marner I get that they were RFA and the situation was different but signing Tavares to his contract was the bar that was set. You knew if they had good years (which they did) they were gonna say well you paid him that so I’m worth close to. You can argue all you want about who is or who isn’t overpaid but there’s no denying the Tavares signing set the standard for Matthews and Marner.
Ok, fine. Lets say Tavares are set the standard. But he did take a discount (of 2 million) to sign in Toronto. And also, how is Tavares, a superstar UFA in his prime, not worth 11 million? No matter where he went, his salary would have been around there. Possibly higher. Aside from your anti-Leafs bias I don’t know why that’s not a fair contract
Now, if Matthews signed for the same thing as JT (11x7), I would have been happy. But he got half a million more for 2 less years. Matthews clearly didn’t base his ask on Tavares’ contract because his was significantly worse for the leafs. Matthews’ contract was the reason Marner was overpaid. Tavares has nothing to do with that.
