Are you sure that's a rule? If true, NYR will have to try to trade Brendan Smith in the offseason (to a rebuilding team like Ottawa or Detroit, along with a draft pick). I think they can manage that since it's only 1 year. Boston was able to move Backes.

And Hank won’t be back. Whether he’s traded, bought or retires is the only question. He will either cost us $4.25m, $5.5m or $3m against the cap next year, for each respective scenario
