Description

I do believe that this Penguins team is constructed to be a legitimate Stanley Cup contender. They are playing miles better compared to the last 2 seasons and look very similar to the 2016 team which dominated with their speed and skill. Honestly, if the team is healthy going into the playoffs, I really don’t think they need to make any moves. The only aspect they don’t have is the heaviness and grit, however they didn’t have that either in 2016 so they will have to outskate their opponents and play a puck possession game. I think they will have a tough time getting by the Bruins, Capitals and Blues. Teams that not only have the speed to keep up with them but also have that heaviness to grind them down. Still, this team looks even better than the 2016 team (when they had freaking Conor Sheary on the top line), so they have a great chance.

I put Tanev w/Sid because I feel his game is similar to Dupuis. He’s really fast, forechecks & generally isn’t afraid to deliver a hit. I know Bjugstad has been injury prone, but he’s actually highly skilled when healthy & could bring something to the top line. He was a first round pick, don’t forget. I want to keep the Jake-Geno-Rust and Chucky-McCann-Kahun lines because they’ve been playing so good. What’d you think?

Aston-Reese over Simon on the fourth line, good penalty killer and throws the body around. I’d rather have Johnson as the 6th dman instead of rikola. lafferty on the top line maybe?

They need to keep ZAR in the lineup because he’s taking a huge step forward this year and he’s unreal in terms of defensive metrics. That being said I don’t see them breaking up ZAR-Blueger-Tanev. I really like that you have Riikola in. I feel like he could really benefit from consistent playing time.

ZAR is the best defensive forward in the NHL right now. taking him out of the lineup is a mistake.

other than that, i'll believe this roster is a stanley cup contender if they can get better performances out of galchenyuk, hornqvust, and tanev. those three have to step up for the penguins to be a threat beyond the first round.

Galchenyuk is heating up and Tanev has been great all season. He’s helped formed the best 4th line have had since Fehr-Cullen-Kunhackl. However, I think Tanev can even play with Crosby. Hörnqvist is alright, he can play anywhere through the lineup. Rust and Guentzel are playing like MVPs carrying the washed up Malkin on this great stretch. They must continue that.

I agree on the fourth line. They are really good. Riikola is a great skater and playing some more could help his confidence, but the coach likes Johnson and he’s been decent this season to be honest.

Lafferty is pretty much the same thing as Bjugstad yet cheaper and healthier. I’d rather have him and trade Jugs.

They probably won’t but they’ve honestly played so well together. Not sure if Geno could find that success with anyone else. Maybe McCann. It’s going to be real interesting when everyone comes back.
