From MTL pov I like it. I think that he'd be in until Suzuki proves he's ready then I wouldn't mind trading Ilia away with retained salary to a contender that want to stack their wings (Trading Chuk at 3.25M$ for one or two years left can get a nice return).

It's still possible for MTL to get Kovalchuk without trading Alzner in return. If Hudon is involved in trade for example (+pick), MTL have enough space for a 23 men roster. The thing is this would take a spot projected for Poehling or Suzuki.



I'm not quite sure a contender would want Kovalchuk that much, but with a huge retain on salary they can give it a try.

I think the goal here is to switch up bad contract. Alzner is worst than Kov so yeah, Mtl should add.

Maybe a thing like :

Alzner + B- prospect + 3rd round pick or so

vs

Kov

And next year, at TDL, Kov at 3,125M could interest a lot of teams i think
