Nobody ever asks for exactly what they'll accept. Always a little higher. Negotiation can and more times than not bring down the cap hit they originally were asking for. Its not like Gusev has a ton of options. If he did than he could stand pat at 4M until someone finally signs him. He doesn't. Its Vegas or KHL.

Gm's job is to negotiate with the agent and eventually both sides make concessions. The better player is and the more options he has the better the odds he has of making what he wants. Gusev has to accept Vegas or he may not play in the NHL this year... which was his goal from the start. He could have stayed in Russia and got paid his 4M if he wanted to.

Its doesn't say if he doesn't get 4M. It say if he does not receive a contract or a trade by an undisclosed date.


What would an agent say otherwise? "We'll only take 4M but if they sweet talk us a little we will eventually drop to 3M?????". By doing that they lose all negotiating power.

Agents use the media to improve negotiation power all the time. These are tactics and literally every agent does this.

Could he actually go back to Russia? Of course. Could he also be saying all this to get a deal closer to his asking price out of Vegas or any other team that trades for him? Dang straight.

In this same article it says McPhee has only offered 2M. We don't know what Gusev would do if he was offered 3M which is right between what he and Vegas offered. Pretyy decent compromise.

Asking and not settling for anything less is how negotiations do not work.
They will settle for a number between 2-4m, that is the nature of negotiations
