Description
Understand that I'm not actually trading these players, I'm simply moving Holland's signings off the roster and my preferred players on. The UFA's were signed using Evolving Hockey's estimates exactly:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/15E1qqh3OfHvvhbv_pICfKT7VR1jJEVhWQOyKviWLN54/edit#gid=707766415

I've also demoted Brodziak and Manning. The only AHL player I've brought up for game 1 is Lagesson. If you prefer Jones or Bear over Lagesson that works too - they all cost about the same money. I would be happy to replace Ennis and Carr with Benson and Gambardella too, and if Puljujarvi signs we can eliminate Pominville. We simply don't need this many players. The AHL roster is overflowing. Since there are 4 AHL-only forwards + 2 defensemen, this might be a better solution.

I'm not convinced McElhinney is the right goalie and I dislike the fact that Tampa gave Mac a 2 year term. I suppose the second year can be buried without much trouble if need be. This move saves $1.7M on cap over Smith as Smith has $1M in performance bonuses that are likely to vest.

Now, this is an "in a perfect world" scenario because of course we don't know if any of these UFA's were interested in coming to Edmonton, or if they would have signed for the same money or term. But we don't know that they weren't interested either, or that they wouldn't have come for a matched offer. Actually, we do know that Connolly was interested, his agent talked about it on local radio apparently.

*****

Despite moving a bunch of tweeners, we still have a very full AHL roster, not including the 6 AHL contracts. I'm projecting the lines as follows:

Benson - Marody - Yamamoto
Gambardella - Brodziak - Currie
Hebig - McLeod - Maksimov
Safin - Malone - Russell

Jones - Bear
Lowe - Bouchard
Samorukov - Day
Manning

I get the concept, but I don't think it entirely works, because the cap hits would be much different. For example, Connolly signs in tax free Florida for 3.5, what do you think it takes for him to turn down that offer to go to Edmonton. I'm guessing over 5.

I doubt it. I'd just structure the deal so that some/most of the money gets paid in annual signing bonuses in July, therefore he pays tax wherever his summer residence is. See Auston Matthews contract for an extreme example.

In Florida 3.5MM gets Connolly slightly over 2.2 a year. In edmonton that gets him a smidge over 1.6. You're not making that difference up with signing bonuses.

I don't think you understand how these guys pay taxes. Instead of $3.5M in salary I could pay him $3M bonus + say $.75 salary and the after tax income would be equal. Provided he maintains a residence in a tax-free state, of course.

I don't think you understand how taxes work. Taxes in Edmonton are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay higher than taxes in Florida.

Obviously. Which is why I suggested structuring the deal like I did.
