How does that help either Marner or the Leafs? He will still be restricted and in 2 yrs you have Andersons contract up with Reilly on his last yr

I dont like the deal much for the same reasons you have and think it's a bit much, but Fried has reported and i'm just trying to see the possibilities

Stetcher is the amazing player and Vancouver has a Boner for him so it will take more than 4th rounder

Well let me report something, Marner would sooner sign a long term offersheet anywhere in the league for 11+ million over 6-8 years than sign a 2 year deal with the leafs. Thats a promise. There is no comparable or precedent for this

Friedman's an idiot, No way Marner accepts that. His own agent pretty much said that a bridge deal isn't happening.

I've been listening closely to what what the Marner camp wants and its term more than anything.
I see him signing 5 yrs low 9s
it will give the Leafs a little more wiggle room now and time to deal with things in 5 yrs

& the Leafs have made it clear the won't go 5 years. Then Marner, Matthews, & Nylander are all UFA in the same year. A 2-3 year bridge deal makes a lot of sense actually for both sides

Panarin signed a 2 year 6m deal after a 77 point season. That's your comparable/precedent

False. Andersen's deal is up in 2 years, yes. Rielly has 3 years left.

& the reason why it helps is quite simple actually. A 2-3 year bridge deal keeps Marner in RFA status and lowers his AAV against the cap short term (helps the team). This allows more additions to be made now and help the team win now in its next 2 year window (helps team). Marner gets a historically high bridge deal that was close to the reported 3 year/$9M AAV that Matthews almost signed (helps Marner). In 2-3 years the cap is expected to spike up a lot due to Seattle coming into the league and the new TV deal in the US. Then Marner can renegotiate like Subban did and get his big time, long term contract and cash in (helps Marner). By my count that helps Toronto in 2 ways and helps Marner in 2 ways, seems pretty fair when you break it down and know the finances and future implications of it

there is a LARGE difference between a 77 point year and leading your team in scoring with 94 points. Why would Marner take this? If leafs dont offer him term and money similar to if not equal to Matthews money, im just telling you, he has no reason to settle for 3 million less than hes worth per year for a vastly shortened term. Players want security, hence the desire for protected long term deals. His comparable in dollars and term has already been set by the Matthews number, who Marner has proven to be potentially more valuable than. I know Toronto fans badly want to see him sign for a single digit number, but it just wont happen with teams prepared to offersheet him for much, much more. Why wouldn't he accept an 11-12 million sheet for 6-8 years if leafs laid a stupid 2 year deal for 8 a year at his feet?
