Fair enough, if the 2020 1st is top 10 protected instead of playoff protected, we might want NSH to retain some salary (1mm aav max)

The Preds have no use for Vatanen. If they trade Subban, the top two RD are Ellis and Fabbro - Vats would be 3rd pairing and I don't see the preds resigning him. If Subban is traded, it is for players that they would want long-term.

It is a lot to expect Fabbro to slide right into a 2nd pairing next year. He is probably a year away from being able to take on those minutes considering he wasn't playing even 13 minutes per game last year. Having Vatanen at only 2.5mm for that bridge year is pretty good for a win-now kind of team. The long-term assets that Nashville would get are the 2 picks, and an extra 6.5mm in cap space to go after Duchene.

True. He does look good, but it's good to ease Fabbro in. I just think they could do better. Trying to snag at least one known prospect they can develop and a couple of picks or an established top 6 forward. I just don't think Vatanen is the type of player they would covet or target.

What if we switched Vatanen for Miles Wood?

Also, with the cap rising less than expected, there are less teams willing to take on 9mm AAV for someone who is coming off of a really bad year.

The 2020 2nd would need to be a straight up 1st rounder -- but I think there is actually potential for a Hall - Subban deal (with other pieces involved) if Hall doesn't plan on signing longterm in NJ. Otherwise, I just don't really see a fit with those pieces. Not that it is necessarily a bad deal, I just don't think it is the right deal.

If the Devils trade Hall, then they are going full rebuild which means Subban would not be part of the deal.

I think Quenneville would work great in this deal. He hasn't done anything in New Jersey and needs a fresh start. He is a power play specialist in the AHL but hasn't gotten the chance to play on the power play for the Devils. I think Nashville would be interested in trying to spark the former first round pick into boosting their power play that was god awful last season.
