Description
This entire lineup creates the option for players to move up to higher lines based off of who is performing better on offense or defense. Some of the forwards from the 3rd line could easily move up into the second line and some from the 4th could push into the third. The backup 7/8 d men could also earn their way into the third pair.

Even though Martin St. Louis is reaching the end of his career I chose to sign him to a one year contract. Playing with Malkin, he stands to put up comparable point totals to other wing options Pittsburgh has looked at, such as Oshie. Signing him as a free agents lets the Pens save their assets though and get some draft picks for trade worthy players so that they may start developing their prospect pool back up. With St. Louis only under contract for one year it leaves a spot for Kapenen or Bennett to slot into the following season. If the salaries I came up with don't quite cut it for St. Louis, Comeau or Tikhonov there is a good bit of salary left over to pick from. As controversial as it is, I chose to sign Sergei Gonchar to a $1m 1yr contract. I brought him in for what he could do for the locker room with his leadership, what he could do with mentoring players like Dumoulin, Pouliot, Maata...and also for what help he may be able to bring to the power play. If he isn't doing his part he will not get a slot. That simple. At the end of the day, with the other moves that were made he was affordable with money left over.

If Sutter doesn't pull that 2nd round pick by himself a low round pick could be added with him to make this happen. This gets Pittsburgh a pick that is almost the 1st rounder they missed out on.

This is a conceivable roster. St. Louis and Gonch would bring leadership which this team needs. Leaves some cap space if they need to make a deadline deal and gets some draft picks which they need as well. Nice.

Thanks. I agree 100% on St. Louis and Gonchar bringing some much needed leadership. And they definitely can use all of the draft picks they can get a hold of right now.

i would disagree with signing Martin St. Louis. We are already overpaying two older guys in Kunitz and Dupuis, whose production and health are clearly on the down slope, and I should hope they provide leadership. The penguins need to get younger with players that can rise up and be better, not get older with players who are only getting worse.

As far as the defense goes here, its a little sketchy. No insurance if Letang gets hurt. Which happens a lot.
