Rangers decline the 1st 2 deals. This is not a draft worthy of moving up in since pick 13 nets you the same value as pick 20. This trade might make sense next year. But you're still giving up WAY too much. Georgiev has significant value. You're basically trading 3 2nds to move up 7 spots in a ****ty draft.

Vesey is entering a Contract year, where at the conclusion of it, he will become an Unrestricted Free Agent. At no point over the course of his Career will he be an RFA again.

I agree that I don’t want to make that trade but this is far from a bad draft.

It is a very bad draft. Picks 1-2 are totally great don't get me wrong. But I'd rather have pick 9 last year or pick 13 next year than pick 3 this year. That's how bad it is.

The reasoning isn’t just bc it’s moving up. This trade is the scenario that podkolzin falls in to floridas lap

It simply doesn't make sense to trade all that for Podkolzin when you can do the same thing next year and get Jan Mysak. If you took away Georgiev entirely it'd work from a pick value perspective. I just don't see the point in moving up to grab Podkolzin. Brink will still be there as will Kaliyev and Dorofeyev. They're all pretty evenly matched.

I really like podkolzin. There is a drop off in my opinion from him and kaliyev

I think you're probably wrong on this one bud. Corey Pronman, as well as other NHL prospect writers, have been writing for months about how much they like this year's crop of guys. Obviously my opinion is based on second hand information, but at least it's something. I guess time will tell.

I understand that. That doesn't automatically revert him back to an RFA.

By stating he is an RFA, you're stating there is at least one more year of control for this player with his original team.

There isn't. He will be a UFA after next year, meaning he is available to everyone. That's one year of control, not more than 1.

Last year was a very deep draft, but very close to this one in terms of depth after the top 3.

Ur right I got him mixed up with a lot of players. But, at the time of the trade he would still belong to the team for another year. Doesn’t rly make a difference

yeah you're extrapolating incorrectly here. It's the top 2 talent. Hughes and Kakko are very good. As I said there is a significant drop off here. The 2nd best dman in this draft (take your pick of York, Heinola, Broberg, Harley, etc) is as good as the 10th ranked dman this year - inferior to Hughes, Boqvist, Dobson, Smith, Bouchard, Smith, Merkley and Miller.

The 3rd pick (I'd probably say Turcotte) - is inferior to Tkachuk, Kravtsov, Zadina, Kotkaniemi, Wahlstrom and Kupari in their draft year. And the depth isn't any better as you get deeper into the 2nd. Guys like Veleno and Bokk who lasted until the 20's last year would be top 10 locks this year.

The draft you're talking about I believe, is next year.

The draft class being arguably “worse” than last years *doesnt make it a bad draft class*

Vasili Podkolzin is locked into an overseas contract for at least another two years, which limits the number of NHL teams willing to consider it at this time. (source: today's Friedman 31 Thoughts (https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/31-thoughts-intrigue-around-nhl-draft-starting-take-shape/).

This is why it's projected to have him slide quite a few positions (probably Detroit picks him, they are not in a rush and Yzerman seems high on the kid)
