Description
Since Riley Barber has made it clear he intends to go to free agency, I'm revisiting my favorite moves for next year.

I'd sell Lars for two 3rds or just the 2nd if that got it done, and take back less for Bura if need be, too. But I think those are FMV. I think Anaheim is in bigger need of defense than forwards, so they would be willing to part with Sprong for Lucas Johansen, and Niskanen fills a valuable veteran, top-4 RD spot for them. That 2nd could become a 3rd or get pushed out a year, but again, I think it's fair as-is.

Plenty of cap space left to get Vrana and Hagelin signed if they need a bit more, plus planning for possible extensions for Backstrom and Holtby.

I'm not sure if Anaheim is going to have cap room for Niskanen. Gibson's extension kicks in next year. Also, I'd probably prefer a cheaper option than Perreault if we're moving out Eller. I'm not sure Perreault is much of an upgrade at that cost and AAV.

Edmonton (nor any team) is going to qualify Burakovsky at $3.25M, allowing him to become a UFA that anyone can sign... so why would they trade a 3rd for him? Or a 4th, or a 7th? They might give Gagner. They would give Lucic. (Then not qualify Burakovsky but be out from under those other bad contracts for "free")

All the values are pretty fair, though I don't see Eller getting a 2nd and the 1st pick of the 3rd round. While I like the idea of Eller on the Avs, we already have Soda and if the Avs are upgrading at center may as well go big.

Sprong is a bust. I wouldn’t take him for free.... nisk has positive value and so does Luca jo?

Nisk= 2nd maybe more

Why would you trade Ellet for less than what we paid for him? His value has 100%!gone up
Sprong doesn’t get you Luca jo.

I’d rather keep bura than give him away for that.

In 89 career games (with ~60% being this season with the Ducks), Sprong has essentially the same stats that Connolly had his first two years in DC. That's not a bust, especially considering his age, contract, and the Caps comparative depth at RW with Barber leaving.

I don't think Nisk gets a second by himself with his age, contract, and recent play. It's all about relative need. The Caps have no need for Johansen with their current defensive depth, they need to get rid of Nisky's contract, and they need a (preferably cheap) option at 3RW. The Ducks need defense in a bad way.

I would trade Eller for less than what we paid for him because we overpaid for him in the first place and I don't believe in the sunk-cost fallacy. And as another commenter mentioned, the 3rd rounder is the first pick of the round, so it's not far off from a 2nd anyway (though I'd be happy for two 3rds regardless).

Okay what need would we have for sprong? His stats directly reflect playing in the top 6. He’s not playing over Wilson or oshie? Boyd is better than him and I’d rather keep Luca tha trade him for a bust. He was a great ahl player but nothing in the nhl. And Connelly first 2 years weren’t anything crazy his most recent year was what I’d expect sprong to be and he’s not..... I’m not going to glorify him he’s a guy who needs talent around him to be good.

And i can’t disagree more about Eller. He’s a great #3 center. But agree to disagree

Nisk at his age would easily fit into 25+ nhl teams top 4 pairings. He’s a very good dman. Cap hit is high but he’s a rhd with a great all around game. His value is easily a 2nd

They should barely have enough room without making any other moves (which would surprise me), but I would expect them to finally buy out Kesler's contract, too.

Eller's career best year of 38 points would have been the worst of Perreault's past six years. He's a definite upgrade, and is signed for three fewer years on the wrong side of 30.

Never underestimate what a bad GM in Edmonton will do. But if not, I'm fine letting Burakovsky walk. They should have found a way to trade him at the deadline. They didn't, so this was the risk.

I see Eller as a Brassad replacement. I'm not as familiar with the Avs, but I assumed Soda was on the 2nd line? If he doesn't work there, then really any other team that could use a 3C for the same kind of trade is OK in my books.

Perreault also only has 14 points in 39 career playoff games. Eller has 44 in 81. Thats a .35 PPG vs a .54 PPG. Eller had more points than Perreault last season, too. He's at a lower cap hit, for longer term, and is younger than Perreault. I just don't see the upside if you look at playoff history and this past season.

Brass was just a typical deadline vet pickup who wasn't really worth the pick we gave up for him. So no need to replace him. Soda is a decent 2c but would be an excellent 3c and the Avs need 1-2 more high end top 6 guys, not another solid middle 6er.

Is Holland a "bad GM" though?

I agree with the other poster though, I don't think Washington will qualify Bura and he'll go to free agency. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up in Edmonton however, just at a much lower dollar figure on a "show me" contract.
