Detroit has an aging defense, but an abundance of young forwards. Wings trade the one that has given them trouble in contract negotiations in the past, to get some youth on the blueline. Detroit also acquires a young goalie they can groom to be Howard's replacement.

Carolina adds some additional scoring power to their top 6, giving up a young, cheap defenseman with upside, which Pittsburgh badly needs. Carolina is ok giving up their 1st with it being a later pick this year due to their playoff success. For Pittsburgh, it is more about freeing up cap space and getting a solid young defenseman that a huge return for Kessel.

This one might be a bit harder to pull off BUT....Ottawa is 13-16M under the cap floor, and will need to add some salary. They have a lot of 25 and younger guys on defense, and very little overall spend on defense. Johnson adds a vet on the backend, helps them get a little closer to the cap floor. Senators had been burying Condon in the minors. Pittsburgh will do the same, but it gives them a 3rd veteran goalie option after having to move Tristan Jarry (who is out of waiver options).
